Residential hotels used for committing crimes:Daily Sun

Authorities of the residential hotels in the capital are not following the directives of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), which is encouraging criminals to use hotels for committing various crimes, including killing, kidnapping and drug business. In March 2008, the DMP had taken an initiative to collect some vital information, including name, mobile number, photo and permanent address, from the
boarders through a specific form. The DMP also directed all the hotel authorities to send the collected information to the police station concerned on a daily basis. While visiting some residential hotels in Moghbazar, Uttara, Sayedabad, Gabtoli, Karwan Bazar and Paltan areas, it was found that the hotel authorities are unwilling to collect boarders’ information in detail. Accordingly, they do not send he collected information to local police station at the end of the day. In addition, many hotels are being used as drug den by local thugs. Hotel authorities’ unwillingness is giving the criminals a chance of fleeing the scene after committing crimes in residential hotels, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Law enforcers conduct raids on different city hotels at a regular interval and arrest hotel employees and visitors while hotel owners remain out of reach. Hotel owners continue their business, he said. Sources said there are over 800 small and big residential hotels in the capital city while only 178 residential have licences from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. According to different law enforcement agencies, over 100 people were killed in different residential hotels in the last five years but the law enforcers could not find out the secret behind many killings due to lack of information. On August 26, police recovered the body of a woman from a residential hotel named “Uttarbanga” in Karwan Bazar area of the capital. It was leant that the woman named Sathi along with a youth rented a room in the hotel hiding their real identities. Later, the youth killed her and fled the hotel safely. On October 20, lawmen recovered the body of a woman named Rubi Akter, aged around 25, from a residential hotel in Uttara area of the capital. On June 9, two Chhatra League activists raped a woman by chaining her husband in a hotel in Moghbazar area. Police arrested Iqbal Hossain Shahin and Ujjal Mia from the spot. Lawmen arrested six drug dealers from a residential hotel in Moghbazar area on June 14. On August 1, plain-clothes police arrested three suspected militants—M Shamin Mahfuz alias Sumon, 38, Jahidur Rahman, 33, and Ismail Hossain, 39—from a hotel in Sayedabad area. When contacted, Monirul Islam, joint commissioner (JC) of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said, “We keep watch on every residential hotel in the capital. We often conduct raid on various hotels when we get specific allegation against them.” “We have sealed off some marked hotels for their alleged connection with antisocial activities. Besides, we have made a list of unregistered hotels and sent it to the deputy commissioner’s office to seal them off,” he added.
