Drug smuggling continues unabated thru Cox’s Bazar:Daily Sun

Smuggling of deadly drugs like Yaba into the country has become rampant through different bordering points in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar and its nearby coastal areas in the last couple of months, destroying the lives of many youths. Organised drug smugglers having link with dishonest law enforcers are regularly bringing such deadly drugs to the country from neighbouring Myanmar and supplying
it to different districts and cities, including the capital and Chittagong, detective sources said. Young people, mostly college and university students, are gradually becoming drug addicts across the country, creating a grave concern among the guardians. According to the police record, police in various drives seized around 2,500,000 pieces of Yaba tablets from different parts of Cox’s Bazar during the last 54 days till Friday. The law enforcers also arrested 323 suspected drug traders, including Nazrul Islam, during the period. The home ministry listed Nazrul as a Yaba smuggler Besides, police seized other drug items, including hemp, heroin, phensidyl and foreign alcohol. They also recovered 13 locally-made guns, four guns, one pipe gun, six cocktails and some other lethal weapons during the same period, police sources said. Alongside police and other law enforcement agencies, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recently recovered large consignments of Yaba tablets from different parts of Cox’s Bazar district. As part of its ongoing drive, BGB members seized 1,111,000 pieces of Yaba tablets on October 13 while 58,000 pieces on September 11. They also recovered 20,000 Yaba tablets on September 23, BGB sources said. Meanwhile, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-9 on Sunday arrested two drug traders with 60 pieces of Yaba tablets from Karbannagar area in Sunamganj. The arrested persons were Humayun Rashid and Nur Mohammad. During police interrogation, the suspected drug traders who were arrested from different areas of Cox’s Bazar district said they were involved in drug business like Yaba smuggling for long. They smuggled Yaba tablets into the country from different bordering points of neighbouring Myanmar. Later, they supplied drug items to different parts of the country, including Dhaka and Chittagong. Local sources said organised smugglers of the harmful Yaba tablets have built up a strong network in Dhaka’s underworld. Besides the listed drug smugglers, some influential persons of bordering areas having link with political leaders and law enforcers also get involved in this immoral trade, detective sources said. According to the detective sources, a group of Yaba smugglers live along the Myanmar-Bangladesh border to run their illegal business. Smugglers bring the Yaba tablets from Myanmar through different points along the border such as Shapurir Dip, Shaprang, Teknaf, Nilla and Whykong, a senior detective officer said. He said smugglers supply the Yaba tablets to the local markets where their partners live. Currently, Yaba tablets are increasingly being smuggled across the border by carriers who hope to earn money from this business, sources said. Not only youngsters of well-to-do family, youths of middle- and lower-income families are now taking such banned drug item, endangering their lives. Talking to daily sun on Friday night, Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police (SP) Shyamal Kumar Nath said, “Against the backdrop of Yaba smuggling, we have launched massive drives at different parts of the tourist district to seize the deadly drug and arrest its smugglers. We have declared a war against this harmful drug.” In the face of massive drives, the organised gangs of drug smugglers have already changed their smuggling routes, the SP said. “Many smugglers have recently been arrested with Yaba tablets along the border and sent to jail. But within a very few days, they get bail and come out of jail. They again get involved in the same business,” he said.
