Mondays cabinet meeting witnessed a brooding silence over expulsion of formal minister Abdul Latif Siddique as none of the council of minister did utter a single word, sources said. Not a single word was uttered on Abdul Latif Siddique in the cabinet meeting. The premier also refrained from making any word on him, said a minister wishing not to be named. Latif, axed from the cabinet and from
the post of the presidium of ruling Awami League on Sunday, drew a widespread criticism at home and abroad for his derogatory remarks on the prophet (pbuh), hajj and Tablig Jamaat. He served the post, telecommunications and IT ministry as full minister. Seeing the faces of the ministers, I assume that none was unhappy over his expulsion, said the minister. Besides, the ministers cracked jokes on two otherscivil aviation and tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon and information minister Hasanul Haq Inuas the ministers from two left-leaning parties performed hajj this year. Some ministers and their deputies collapsed into giggles when a colleague said Rashed and Inu should be addressed as Alhaj and Comrade. Menons Workers Party and Inus Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal are the allies of the Awami League-led 14-party government. Both the ministers are scheduled to return home on October 15. The meeting also dissolved into laughter over the nuptials of railways minister Mazibul Haque, who is set to tie the knot at pretty late, and labour affairs state minister Mujibul Haque Chunnus second marriage. The premier enquired about the marriage date of railways minister and his wedding party. The minister in reply said the date has been brought forward by two months to October from December. In another statement, Chunnu said his relatives from abroad are calling him up, seeking to find out about his second marriage. This is most embarrassing, he told the premier as his colleagues burst out laughing. He (railways minister) is getting married, but my marriage is on the rocks. My wife has been asked by many why your husband needs to marry again at 60. Then the state minister for labour turned to the railway minister, smiling and said: If my marriage breaks up, you will be responsible. The railways minister replied: Please, stay away from me. Meanwhile, Law Minister Anisul Haq told the premier that a condemned accused of Bangabandhu has been residing in the USA. After his speech, another minister said, American senators often issue letters to us on our internal affairs. We will also send letters to them requesting to extradite the killer of Bangabandhu. Other ministers supported his proposal. The law minister will draft the letter in this regard while other ministers and lawmakers send separate letters based on the draft, said the minister. The meeting also discussed about the poor unionism in the USA, which always asking the government to allow unionism at factories. Only eight per cent industries have allowed unionism in America. Besides, the meeting approved the draft of Trademark (Amendment) Act 2014 increasing the time frame to 360 working days from 120 days to dispose of the cases relating to trademark of a product or service. The approval was given during a regular weekly cabinet meeting at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Emerging from the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hossain told reporters that the existing law has a provision to dispose of a case by 120 working days. It is seen that it is impossible to resolve any case during the stipulated time as the work has to be completed through seven stages. More than 300 working days are needed to resolve such case. Bhuiyan said the law was first introduced in 1940 while the rules were formulated in 1963. The law has been enacted lastly in 2009. This new law has been formulating amending the Trademark Law 2009. The industries ministry has placed the draft of the law, he added.
