Poor cancer patients deprived of treatment at NICRH:Daily Sun

Many poor cancer patients are going back without receiving treatment from the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH) due to shortage of radiotherapy machines. Hospital sources, however, said some 300 cancer patients are taking radiotherapy everyday through three Linier Exhilarators which is simply inadequate as per demand. Public health experts and renowned oncologists have e
xpressed their concern over the limited facilities for the treatment of cancer patients in the country. Dr Mofizur Rahman, assistant professor (radiology) department of NICRH, said some 15 million patients have been suffering from different types of cancer at present while about 0.25 million are infected with the deadly disease every year. “Cancer poses a serious threat to public health in the country with nearly 200,000 deaths every year due to poor treatment facilities in the state-run hospitals. Poor cancer patients suffer most as they don’t have adequate money to receive treatment from private hospitals or to go abroad for treatment. They die without getting the required treatment,” he said. The expert has made the observations on the basis of the World Health Organisation (WHO) findings of 2010. Dr Abu Jafor Mohammad Hakim, a renowned health expert, said NICRH is the only specialised hospital for cancer patients in the country which is working for 160 million people with inadequate medical equipment. Dr Hakim said cancer kills more people than tuberculosis, HIV and Malaria do combined. It is the second biggest killers among the non-communicable diseases. Talking to daily sun, Prof Dr Samiul Islam, director of NICRH, said some 700/800 patients visit outdoor department of the hospital on an average. Some 300 cancer patients are taking radiotherapy everyday through three Linier Exhilarators which is simply inadequate as per demand. “Radiotherapy is one of the major parts of cancer treatment and the country needs radiotherapy machines to provide radiotherapy to cancer patients,” he said. He finally urged the government to increase the overall facilities of the hospitals so that poor cancer patients can receive treatment smoothly. When contacted, Director (Hospital) of Directorate of Health Service Dr Abdul Hannan said, “We are taking steps to enhance the facilities of the hospitals.”
