Security of Bangladesh top priority in talks:Daily Sun

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali is now in New Delhi on a three-day visit that began on Thursday. Before leaving Dhaka in the morning, Mahmood Ali said he will seek assurance from the government of India that it would not allow the use of its soil for any activity that goes against Bangladesh’s interests. He will also focus on measures to stop killings on porous borders, the minister told reporte
rs at a pre-departure press conference at Shahjalal International Airport. A 30-member high-profile entourage, including senior secretaries, accompanied him. About government’s stance on the Saradha-Jamaat link, he said, “Surely, we’ll want to know about India’s stance… Let me go there and discuss it.” Indian newspapers recently discovered that a mighty section of politicos and businesses, including Indian company Saradha, provided financial aid to Jamaat to create political instability in Bangladesh last year. Ali said Bangladesh expects that India would not allow its soil against Bangladesh as the country had made the point clear. “We have common stance on it. We also want reassurance from India about cessation of killing Bangladeshis on borders.” Both the governments have declared a strong inter-state connectivity for mutual benefits, the minister mentioned. According to Ali, inter-country connection stands for development of infrastructure with regard to improving rail, road and waterway transportation of people and goods. “We [Bangladesh and India] will also look for new avenues for bilateral cooperation in future,” he told journalists. During his maiden visit to India as foreign minister, Ali will meet Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. On Saturday, he will attend the third meeting of Bangladesh-India Joint Consultative Commission (JCC). Bangladesh side will raise various pending issues such as signing of Land Boundary Agreement, Teesta Water Sharing Treaty and security assistance for discussion at the JCC meeting. Besides, coordinated border management, extradition of criminals, bilateral trade and commerce, regional and sub-regional cooperation and assistance between two countries in the fields of information technology, science and culture may come up for discussion during the meeting. The JCC meeting would also evaluate the progress on different issues, which were discussed at the second JCC meeting held in Dhaka in February last year. “We hope this meeting would pave the way towards strengthening the bilateral relations,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement. This is the first visit to Delhi by Bangladesh Foreign Minister after Modi was sworn in as the prime minister of India in May this year. Modi has already announced that he would take steps to strengthen bilateral relations with Bangladesh and other neighbours. His government’s foreign minister Sushma Swaraj had visited Dhaka last June. She had met Bangladesh’s President Md Abdul Hamid Advocate and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her visit. She also handed a ‘welcome letter’ to Sheikh Hasina from Modi. Earlier this month, Sushma Swaraj told media that the issues with Bangladesh have been identified. “India is keen to resolve those issues with Bangladesh,” she said. Ali’s Delhi tour will end on September 21, according to MoFA statement.
