Biman chairman’s removal demanded:Daily Sun

Lawmakers of main opposition Jatiya Party on Sunday staged a walkout from parliament protesting government’s inaction against chairman of Biman Bangladesh Airlines for his alleged involvement in gold smuggling. They registered protest on the floor and walked out for inaction against Air Marshal (retd) Jamal Uddin Ahmed even after the latest breakthrough in gold smuggling and other irregularities
in running the national flag carrier. Mainuddin Khan Badal of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, a partner in the Awami League-led alliance government, and two independent MPs—Haji Selim and Tahjib Alam Siddique—also demanded that the government immediately remove the Biman chief to save the airlines. Of the two independent lawmakers, Tahjib walked out of parliament for two minutes following the JP MPs. They, however, joined the House later. The stormy debate on the Biman boss was initiated by MP Badal who, on a point of order, lambasted Jamal for his involvement in various irregularities and corruption to give Biman a bad shape. “In the 9th parliament, parliamentary standing committee on civil aviation formed a subcommittee on Biman’s corruption. Led by me [Badal], the subcommittee submitted a report to the House after a six months’ intensive work. But the government didn’t take action against anyone identified.” Pointing to Jamal, Badal queried, “Has he become a super citizen of the country?” “The subcommittee worked hard,” he lamented, “but the government kept silent on our findings?” A litany of allegations was raised against the Biman chief for his incapacity and worthlessness in running the national entity. “Three ministers were changed from civil aviation ministry in the last couple of years, but Jamal Uddin remained untouched,” Badal went on. He cited various irregularities of Jamal, including lease of aircraft for Biman, route planning and appointment of 160 cabin crew. Lambasting the Biman boss, JP MP Kazi Feroz Rashid said a parliamentary subcommittee termed Jamal a thief for which the airliner was on the verge of collapse. “Even though, the government didn’t take action against Jamal.” Hinting at Polash, ‘godson’ of Jamal, Feroz said, “Polash’s wife is a cabin crew but she used to travel business class in Biman.” “But how?” he queried. He wanted to know from Civil Aviation Minister Rashed Khan Menon, who was present in the House, whether his ministry would remove Jamal Uddin or not. “We will have no other choice but to walk out if the minister doesn’t give any promise right now regarding the Biman chairman’s removal.” As Menon remained silent, JP lawmakers, led by Feroz Rashid, walked out of the House. On a point of order, MP Tahjib also lambasted Jamal and staged a walkout. Haji Selim also came down too hard on Jamal and demanded that the civil aviation minister give a statement in parliament explaining all these issues under rule 300 of the Rules of Procedure of parliament. Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Mia, who presided over the sitting at that time, said the minister cannot give his statement in response to the points of order. He advised the lawmakers to submit their respective notices to parliament in line with the due procedure. Faze Rabbi hoped the minister concerned will take action in line with the lawmakers’ points of order to give Biman a good shape.
