Five cases have been filed against BNP chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia alone. Of these, in two graft cases charges have been framed on March 19 last. These two cases are on the stage of taking evidence. As many as 15 cases have been filed against its senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman. Acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is accused in 47 cases. Till yesterday
(Sunday) 21 cases against him have been charge-sheeted. Not only these four leaders, more than 8,000 cases have been filed against the partys central leaders to field level leaders and activists over the last five years. Besides, in the cases filed against unidentified accused the detained BNP leaders and activists are being shown arrest. In short BNP leaders and activists are plagued with cases. BNP joint secretary general barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon has claimed that cases are hanging on about 20 lakh leaders and activists of BNP across the country. Among these, in the cases filed under Speedy Trial Act all accused are being charged indiscriminately without specifying real offender. Even no video footage of violence is being seized as proof. Criminal law experts say that the cases are being weakened by making central leaders accused indiscriminately. Real perpetrators are taking advantage of it. About the filing of cases against BNP leaders and activists, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told Kaler Kantho on Sunday, Government is filing cases against BNP leaders and activists one after another only to politically harass them. These cases are being filed as part of the conspiracy to oust BNP from politics. The government thinks that BNP can be routed by filing cases. But this perception of the government will be proved wrong. BNP is carrying on movement in the country to establish democracy. With the people with us, democracy will be reestablished, InshaAllah. Wanted to know whether the movement is being hampered for going to court for appearance or seeking bail, Mirza Fakhrul said As more than one cases have been filed, I have to appear before the court. But we have taken it as part of the movement. We do not think that movement is being hampered because of cases. Rather public opinion is being formed against the government due to these false cases. BNP Joint Secretary General Mahbub Uddin Khokon told Kaler Kantho that BNP can not be suppressed by filing such false cases. Information available showed that over 9,000 cases were filed against ranks and files of BNP-led alliance in connection with countrywide violence in last two years. A number of 400 cases were filed in Dhaka alone. BNP and Jamaat men are mostly accused in these cases. BNP leaders and activists have been accused in 8,500 cases across the country since 2009. In last one year, over two hundred cases were filed against BNP men in the capital. Of them, Mirza Fakhrul, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Amanullah Aman and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi were charge-sheeted in 65 cases. Mirza Fakhrul who was implicated in 21 cases was confined in jail several times. The Supreme Court is set to hear two appeals filed by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia against the High Court verdict which rejected her petitions challenging the lower courts decision framing charges against her and others in two graft cases involving Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust. Dhaka Special Judge -3 Basudev Roy indicted her and others on March 19 this year. Khaleda filed writ on April 13 while HC rejected after 10 days. Later, Khaleda filed two appeals against the HC order. The court has been shifted to Dhaka Alia Madrasa premises in Bakshi Bazar to hold trial of the accused in connection with two cases. Police submitted two charge-sheets against 103 BNP leaders and activists in connection with two cases on August 3 and July 28. The cases were filed under the Penal Code and the Explosive Act respectively. The case documents said the accused persons obstructed police on their duties in front of BNPs office at Paltan on March 11.
