Serving jail term is nothing new in the life of Latif Siddique. He was sent to jail for selling government yarn in the black market. As his wife Laila Siddique became a lawmaker during Ershad regime in 1988, she secured his release on general amnesty. After 26 years, he has landed up in jail on charge of making derogatory comment about Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), hajj and Tabligi Jamaat. The
people who are demanding his punishment include HM Ershad who once pardoned him. It is learnt from local political leaders and common people of Kalihati upazila under Tangail that Latif discharged duty as director of state-run organisation Tangail Artisan. That time, he sold out huge amount of yarn in the black market. He also sold relief materials illegally. He was sentenced to imprisonment for 7 years for the above corruption. The court sent him to jail in 1986. His wife contested election as an independent candidate in 1988. She tried to convince voters saying if she wins, her husband will be released. After being elected, she secured release of her husband on general amnesty. Kalihati upazila chairman Mazharul Anwar said “Latif Siddique was sentenced to 7 years jail for selling yarn illegally. He had to land up in jail in 1986. As his wife became MP in 1988, he got released trough general amnesty. He had to languish in jail for two years.” A leader who has retired from the politics willingly recently said, “Latif Siddique lived abroad for several years after the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu. When Sheikh Hasina took over charge as President of Awami League after returning to country then Latif Siddique opposed it. But after return to Bangladesh Latif Siddique did not make any comment against the leadership of Sheikh Hasina.” Locals said, though Latif Siddique was born at Kalihati village, his father Abdul Ali Siddique brought his family members to Akurtakur Para in Tangail town and started living there. At that time Abdul Ali Siddique worked at Jute Corporation. He could not maintain his family with the poor salary received from the Jute Corporation office. For better survival, Abdul Ali Siddique joined moktari profession it Tangail court in 1955. At that time Latif Siddique joined student politics. He was elected VP of Korotia Sadaat College Student Sangsad for 1964-1965 term. During the tenure of his student politics he played an active role in the 6-point movement in 1966 and mass upsurge of 1969. It is learnt that he was sent to jail during his student life. He also took part in the Liberation War as an organizer and won the election in 1970. After the independence he also won the election in 1973. Latif Siddique was defeated as an Awami League candidate in 1991 general election after being released from jail in a general amnesty by the President. But he won the election in 1996. Again he won the election of 2008 while he was made the Textile and Jute Minister of Awami League government. Since then, he has held important positions. Later he got the post of a presidium member of the highest policy making forum of the party. Abdul Latif Siddique was not involved in any renowned profession for earning money. But after assuming office as a minister of the government he started to amass wealth. Before the ninth parliamentary election of 2008, the value of movable and immovable properties of Latif Siddique was over Tk 11.15 lakh. At that time, the amount of her wife’s property was Tk 41,000 only. After five years, in 2014, according to a property statement submitted in the Election Commission for 10th parliamentary election, the value of the properties of Latif Siddique stood at over Tk 2.9 crore. On the other hand, the value of his wife’s wealth stood at over Tk 27.10 lakh. But sources concerned apprehend her property may be more than what has been shown.
