Rapid Action Battalion produces six persons at a press conference at RAB headquarters in the capital on Sunday after arresting them over the murder of Prof Shafiul. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members arrested six people, including th

The arrestees are mastermind Md Abdus Samad alias Pintu, former vice-president of RU Chhatra Dal, Ariful Islam Manik, organising secretary of Katakhali municipality unit of Juba Dal, and Md Sabuj Sheikh, Md Sirajul Islam alias Kalu, Md Al Mamun and Md Ibrahim Khalil alias Tokai Babu. They were produced before the journalists at RAB headquarters on Sunday. Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan, director at Legal and Media Wing of RAB, said, “Around 11 people took part in the killing mission. We nabbed six of them, including the mastermind of the murder.” According to the arrestees, three people—Arif, Sagor and Jinnah—were arrested by police. But the RAB official could not confirm it. Two more people—Jamai Babu and convener of district Juba Dal Anwar Hossain Ujjal—are on the run, he said. The RAB official said around 10 to 15 days before the murder of Prof Shafiul Islam, the RU teacher misbehaved with Nasrin, wife of Pintu and a section officer (accounts section) of RU. When Pintu asked the teacher about the matter, an altercation occurred between Pintu and Shafiul Islam. Following the altercation, Pintu made a plan to harass him. Later, he informed Anwar Hossain Ujjal, convener of district Juba Dal, of the plan. Afterwards, Ujjal talked to the teacher about the incident and a heated altercation took place between them in the administrative area of the university. As Ujjal felt insulted on that day, he also made a plan to take revenge. Later, Ujjal and Pintu gave the assignment to Manik who collected people to complete the killing mission. According to their plan, they took position in various places of Bihas residential area at about 2:30pm on November 15. When the teacher reached near Bihas, they waylaid Shafiul. At first, Sabuj hit him over the head with a machete and the professor fell down on the ground. Then, Mamun, Arif, Babu, Kalu and others chopped him indiscriminately and left the spot. Pintu and Ujjal were also present on the spot. Later, locals rushed Shafiul to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital. This correspondent also talked to arrested Manik and he narrated the same story. While asked about Jamaat controlled militants involvement with the incident, Mufti Mahmud Khan told journalist that they did not find any involvement of militants during their investigation. He said, “We found no involvement of the female student rescued from the house of Shafiul.” The arrested persons were produced at a press conference at RAB headquarters in Dhaka on Sunday. They disclosed details of this planning and participation in the killing. RAB legal and media wing director Mufti Mahmud Khan stated details about the matter. On November 15, sociology teacher Shafiul Islam was stabbed to death near the university campus. Hours after the murder, a militant group titled Ansar Al Islam Bangladesh claimed the responsibility of the murder in a facebook post. Soumin Sahrid Javin, son of Shafiul Islam, claimed that Islamist militants are behind his father’s killing. Police, too, claimed to have information on militants’ involvement with the killing. RU Registrar Entajul Haq filed a murder case the following day without naming anyone. Police detained a number of people during raids in Rajshahi and sought remand for 11 people, all of them Jamaat-e-Islami supporters.
