ning demanding removal of the university proctor postponed the programme in the afternoon upon authorities' assurance of meeting the demand in 24 hours. "We postponed the programme at 5:00pm as the authorities assured us of removing the proctor within 24 hours," Suman Mamun, a leader of the faction, told The Daily Star. "We will resume our demonstration if the authorities do not meet our demand within the stipulated time," he added. Leaders and activists of the faction also locked up the university's main gate at about 11:30pm, protesting the killing of a fellow activist Taposh Chandra Sarker. They blamed the proctor for his "inaction to take legal steps against the killers." Taposh, a Sanskrit department student, was shot dead and four others were injured during a clash between two feuding groups of the ruling Awami League's student front on the campus on Sunday. Meanwhile, police refused to accept a case implicating university proctor Siraj-ud-Daula for backing the BCL faction responsible for the firing and killing. "Proctor favours the BCL group responsible for killing Taposh," alleged Suman, adding, "Law enforcers were dillydallying to accept a case for the murder." Advertisement "We went to the police station to file a murder case mentioning names of the proctor, Cultural Secretary of the dissolved committee of CU BCL Ashrafuzzaman Asha, Environment Secretary of the same committee Enamul Hasan Ovi, and Varsity Express (VEx) group leaders Rubel Dey, Shahrid Shuvo and Durjoy and 23 others. But the officer-in-charge said they would not take the case if the name of proctor was there," he added. Contacted, OC Md Ismail said police were ready to accept a case if filed by the family members of the deceased. Suman said Taposh's brother, who was on the way to Chittagong, would file a murder case. Denying the allegation, Proctor Siraj-ud-Daula said the BCL men were making such claims to divert from their internal feud. 5 CU BCL ACTIVISTS AND 60 OTHERS SUED Police sued five leaders and activists of CU BCL along with 60 anonymous others in an arms case. The lawsuit was filed after lethal weapons -- one shotgun, five cartridges, and 30 other weapons -- were seized during a crackdown on Shah Amanat Hall of the university on Sunday following the death. Habibur Rahman, sub-inspector of Hathazari Police Station, lodged the case over illegal possession of firearms and sharp weapons. Among those named are Ashrafuzzaman Asha, Rubel Dey, Anis, Rashed and Abir. They all are members of VEx group. Police on Sunday raided Shah Jalal and Shah Amanat dormitories and picked up 28 students for questioning. The weapons were also seized then. Among them, three students were later released. A tense situation was prevailing on the CU campus that witnessed repeated violent clashes and killings of students over the years.
