Resting place for war heroes designed:Daily Star

The approved design for freedom fighters' graves. It looks like a narrow bed as if it's inviting one to sleep. One end of it, however, is tilted slightly upwards, like the lowered backrest of a chair. The tilted end with a circle in it symbolises the nation's flag which they achieved through the war and which now will guard them all the time. This was how Asifur Rahman Bhuiyan described his design
for the grave of freedom fighters. "This design will highlight the view that the country's brave sons are sleeping peacefully," said Asifur who is assistant chief architect at the Department of Architecture, and also the designer of 'Shikha Chironton' at Suhrawardi Udyan and the graves of the seven Bir Sreshthos. From now on all freedom fighters' graves will be built after this design to honour their sacrifices. The liberation war affairs ministry has taken the initiative so that the freedom fighters' graves do not remain unmarked and go unnoticed by people. "Anyone looking at the grave will be able to identify it, and the picture will remain in his heart," said Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque. Each grave will bear a freedom fighter's name, dates of birth and death, and a brief description of his contribution to the Liberation War. Ministry sources said the graves of 2,938 martyrs, who were killed in the battle fields during the war, would be built in the first phase which would be completed by 2015. Advertisement The Department of Architecture, the only government organisation to render architectural services under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, designed the graves, which have been approved by the liberation war affairs ministry. The ministry sent a list of 2,938 martyrs to all the deputy commissioners across the country and asked them to identify the locations of their graves. The DCs are now sending their replies, ministry sources said. After completing the identification of their graves, the ministry will send the proposal to the Planning Commission for approval. The ministry allocated TK 38.55 crore to implement the project for the first phase, they added. After completing the first phase, the ministry will attempt to identify the other graves of the freedom fighters, including those of the martyrs, across the country and will construct their graves following the same design. "We have taken the decision so that anyone, upon seeing the freedom fighters' graves, can understand that there lie the country's greatest sons and our independence was achieved through their sacrifices," said AKM Mozammel Haque. Besides graves, the liberation war affairs ministry is working to provide accommodation facilities for insolvent and landless freedom fighters. The liberation war affairs minister said they would provide accommodation facilities for at least 50,000 freedom fighters, one fourth of the total number of freedom fighters.   At present, construction of 2,971 residences for landless freedom fighters is going on. Insolvent freedom fighters each would be provided with a single-storey house which would include all essential facilities, according to ministry sources. The ministry has taken up several other projects for the welfare of the freedom fighters and also to project their heroic contribution to the future generations. The ministry is identifying all the historical places including mass graves and battle grounds, where freedom fighters had fought the Pakistani army and their collaborators in 1971. The ministry will also construct a Muktijoddha Complex Bhaban in every district and a Muktijoddha Complex in each of the 422 upazilas to create jobs and raise funds for the welfare of the freedom fighters, ministry sources said.
