Arrest the miscreant irrespective of his party affiliation to maintai
n law and order,” she directed the administration of Rangpur, Barisal, Barguna and Lalmonirhat through videoconferencing after the regular weekly cabinet meeting at the secretariat. Referring to some subversive activities in the north, especially in Gaibandha, centring the January 5 polls, the premier said the government would not want recurrence of such anarchy and killings any more. “I direct you not to tolerate acts of violence and militancy,” she said, directing the local administration to discharge responsibilities neutrally. “Miscreants should be arrested. Let them know that it’s my order.” Mentioning the murder of an Awami League leader in Rangpur last month, Hasina said law and order must be improved at any cost. “Take stern action against miscreants, militants and drug smugglers as we want people to live in peace,” she went on. A case has been filed against Rangpur city unit Juba League joint convener Ashraful Alam over the killing of ward leader Imran Hossain. Hasina said, “I don’t want to know the party affiliation of the killers. Arrest them first for committing crime and then go for their party identity.” The PM joined the videoconferencing at the cabinet division as part of her plan to communicate with the grass-roots officials and local-body representatives to bring dynamism in administrative and development activities. Exchanging views with the Barguna administration, she directed the authorities concerned to make homes for the homeless in the district. “If anyone is landless or homeless- provide a piece of land or make a home for the person,” she said, asking the administration to ensure basic human rights. Public representatives of the district demanded the premier set up a permanent naval checkpoint and strengthen coastguard activities. About the demands, Hasina said her government would strengthen coastguard. “Although we’ve won maritime dispute cases, we’re unable to catch fish in deep sea due to shortage of big trawlers,” she said, asking businessmen of the coastal belt to come forward so that they could catch fish in deep sea. The premier also directed representatives to make frequent visits to community clinics to check whether the locals get proper medicare. Talking to the Lalmonirhat administration, she said her government drove away monga (famine-like situation) from greater Rangpur region after assuming office in 2009. “We haven’t got a piece of news of monga in the last five years,” she said, adding that the countrymen would not find famine-like situation in future. Hasina directed the Rangpur divisional commissioner to distribute warm clothes and blankets among needy senior citizens and people with disabilities. Earlier, the cabinet adopted an obituary reference over the death of noted genome scientist Prof Maqsudul Alam who died on December 19 in the USA. Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the cabinet observed that the death of Maqsud created a vacuum in scientific research in agricultural sector. The cabinet expressed deep condolence at the premature death of the scientist and recalled his contribution to inventing the genome sequence of jute. A dynamic team of scientists of Dhaka University, Jute Research Institute and IT organisation Data Software, led by Maqsudul Alam, invented the genome sequence of jute in 2010 which the PM formally announced on June 16, 2010. “It’s very sad that the brilliant scientist expired at a very premature age,” the cabinet said. It also recalled that Maqsud’s father embraced martyrdom during the liberation war while he had been serving in the then EPR.
