PMO Photo The ruling Awami League on Saturday observed the historic Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in a befitting manner. On
January 10, 1972 the supreme leader of the country’s Liberation War returned to the soil of an independent Bangladesh from his captivity in a Pakistan jail. To observe the day, Awami League hoisted the national and party flags at Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhanmondi and the party’s offices across the country at 6:30am. On the occasion, thousands of leaders and activists of Awami League and its associate organizations gathered in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban on Sunday morning. Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina paid tribute to Bangabandhu by placing a wreath at his portrait at Bangabandhu Bhaban at 7:00am on Sunday. After placing wreaths, she stood solemn silent for a while. Later, she placed another wreath at Bangabandhu’s portrait on behalf of her party. Awami League leaders Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta, Motia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Syed Ashraful Islam, Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Dipu Moni, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Afzal Hossain and Shahjahan Khan, among others, were present. The leaders of Dhaka city AL, Juba League, Krishak League, Swechhasebak League, Mohila Awami League and Chhatra League also placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu on the day. On behalf of the central Awami League, AL presidium member Obaidul Quader and some other leaders paid tribute to Bangabandhu by placing wreaths at the grave of Bangabandhu at Tungipara of Gopalganj in the morning. Although the victory in the nine-month war of independence was achieved through defeating the Pakistani forces on December 16, 1971, the nation’s expectations were fulfilled with Bangabandhu’s homecoming on January 10 next year. The Pakistani occupation force arrested Bangabandhu from his Dhanmondi residence in the early hours of March 26, 1971, minutes after he proclaimed the independence of Bangladesh through a message. On that night, the Pakistani army launched a massive crackdown in Dhaka. The nation’s victory against Pakistan remained incomplete at that time as Bangabandhu was kept imprisoned in Pakistan. However, Pakistan under international pressure was forced to release Bangabandhu from prisons on January 8, 1972. After his release, Bangabandhu was flown to London. From there, the Father of the Nation landed in independent Bangladesh from a special British flight via New Delhi. Hundreds of thousands of people stood on both the sides of the then Mymensingh Road (now VIP Road) to have a glimpse of their leader as an open truck carrying him was moving towards then Race Course Maidan. On his arrival at the maidan, tens of thousands of elated Bengalis greeted Bangabandhu who orchestrated the birth of a free Bangladesh.
