At least 10 devotees were killed in a stampede during the Astami Snan (holy bath), a religious festival of Hindus, on the bank of the old Brahmaputra river at Langalbandh in Narayanganj on Friday. According to sources, the stampede took place following the spread of a rumour that the bailey bridge adjacent to the Rajghat in Langalbandh Bazaar has collapsed. This is the first such fatal incident in
the history of the traditional holy bath at Langalbandh. About 30 others were also injured in the stampede. The deceased were identified as Maloti Das, 60, of Manikganj, her son Nitai Gopal Das, 30, Prof Nakul Chanda Biswas, 55, of Charmuguria College, Madaripur, Ranjit Chandra Nondi, 55, of Comilla, Kanon Saha, 50, of Comilla, Tulshi Debnath, 52, of Comilla, Bhagabati Das, 50, of Dhanmondi, Dhaka, her daughter-in-law Rakhi Das, 28, Banumoti Nag, 50, of Noakhali, and Suchitra Rani Saha, 70 of Patuakhali. The auspicious time of Ashtami Snan started at 05 hours 48 minutes and 47 seconds on Friday. A total of 16 points, including the Rajghat, were selected for the holy bath of the devotees. Hindu devotees believe that taking bath at Rajghat is more virtuous. So, the pressure of people was mostly on the Rajghat point. The devotees in thousands gathered there and started taking bath. According to a source, around 20 lakh devotees from home and abroad assembled at Langalbandh for the holy bath this year. At about 9 in the morning a female devotee fell ill while crossing the bailey bridge adjacent to the Rajghat and she sat down there. At that time, some of the devotees were dashed from behind by the stream of people and fell down on the bridge. Instantaneously, about 10 unidentified youths spared a rumour loudly that the bridge has collapsed. Immediately, the crowd tried to surge forward. Under the pressure of the surging crowd, a large number of devotees fell victim to the stampede. Ten people were killed on the spot and 30 others injured. Narayangaj SP Khandkar Mohiduddin and Basudeb Chakraborti, secretary of Langalbandh Snan (bathing) Festival, confirmed the deaths of 10 people. MP from Narayangnaj-5 Selim Osman has given Tk 25,000 to each of the families of the dead. Meanwhile, a three-member probe committee has been formed by the district administration with local government deputy director Israt Hossain as its head to investigate the incident. The committee has been asked to submit the report within five days. President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia have expressed deep shock at the deaths of the devotees and prayed for the salivation of the departed souls.
