BNP doing lengthy homework Opposition BNP is still hesitant about participating in the upcoming city corporation elections, as they are deeply calculating the possible:Daily Sun

Opposition BNP is still hesitant about participating in the upcoming city corporation elections, as they are deeply calculating the possible results of the elections amid their ongoing anti-government movement. Party insiders said the BNP high command is scrutinising their possible candidates for the city corporation elections and strategy of polls campaign. They are calculating possibility of vic
tory and loss as well as benefit of participating in the city polls during their ongoing movement to realise their demand for early general election under a non-party government.  When asked about the party’s final decision to participate in the city corporation elections, BNP standing committee member Mahbubur Rahman told daily sun “Decision about participating in the city polls is going to be finalised soon.” “BNP is positive about participation in the city polls, but it wants some conditions to be met first. The government will have to ensure free and fair election, a level playing field for all candidates, stop killing the opposition men, release opposition leaders and activists and withdraw false cases filed against them,” he added. About their participation in city corporation elections during their ongoing movement, Mahbub said, “Our movement will not be interrupted by the city polls as the polls campaign and movement activities will complement each other.” BNP insiders said there are some divisions within the party — some top leaders think that their candidates may not be able to run polls campaigns as many leaders and activists are in jail or on the run, while some others think that participation in the city polls will intensify their ongoing movement as the party men will be revamped with victory. “Our party high command is proceeding with caution about participation in the city corporation elections, as we fear that the government finally might postpone the elections seeing the possibility of victory of the BNP-backed candidates. BNP is now scrutinising the candidates and will disclose the final decision at a time when the government will find it difficult to postpone the polls,” said a BNP leader. A number of leaders of the party said if the BNP decides to participate in the elections or extends support to its preferred candidates, the BNP-led 20-party alliance may postpone its ongoing agitation programmes. “BNP has all possibility to win the mayoral and councilor posts in the city corporation elections as the city dwellers are annoyed with the ruling party due to its misrule, repression, corruption and incidents of abductions, killing and enforced disappearance, prices hike of essential commodities and other irregularities of it,” said a BNP leader.
