NU students bear the brunt of blockade, hartal Students of National University (NU) are the worst victims of the ongoing countrywide blockade and hartal as they could not:Daily Sun

Students of National University (NU) are the worst victims of the ongoing countrywide blockade and hartal as they could not attend classes in the last two months of the action programme. The ongoing blockade-hartal has badly affected academic activities of the colleges under the NU, causing worries among the students over their examinations, sources concerned. Students are going to take their diff
erent honours and masters-level examinations without having their courses completed and they find it difficult to sit for the exams.    All the colleges under the NU across the country could not hold classes in the last two months of the blockade-hartal as presence of the students were very thin during the period. Teachers of some NU colleges said that they could not complete courses as students refrained from attending classes due to the country’s violent situation. “We could not hold requisite number of classes though it is mandatory for the students to attend 70 percent classes,” a teacher said while talking to daily sun.  “It will be tough for the students to do good in the exams as they could not attend classes due to the blockade-hartal enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance,” he added. It is alleged by many that paying regular fees, students of the colleges under the NU are not getting quality education. NU students usually cannot attend classes for more than 120 days annually as big district-level government colleges hold various examinations, sources said. “In this situation, students have to complete their courses on their own,’ the sources added.       Talking to daily sun, many students expressed their frustration as they are going to take their degree or year-final examinations without having requisite number of classes. They said NU students get less number of classes compared to other public universities in the country for various reasons and as a result, they have to face irreparable loss. Md Moniruzzaman, an MSc physics student of Dhaka College said he took admission for masters’ course in October last year. Classes were supposed to be held for about 5/6 months. “But I got classes for 15 to 20 days only.” He said, “such situation is not good for any student to achieve good results. Now there is no scope of attending any classes as our test exams are now at hand.” Md Sadik, an honours final-year sociology student of the college said that the unstable situation prevailing in the country is not at all favourable for us to attend classes. “NU students are the worst sufferers due to the ongoing blockade-hartal as we have to sit for final exams without having the requisite number of classes,” he added, Thousands of NU students and teachers have recently formed human chains across the country, demanding withdrawal of disastrous blockade and hartal programme. Teachers, students and employees from 2,154 educational institutions across the country took part in human chains arranged on their respective campuses. NU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Harun-or-Rashid said the NU authorities have taken various steps, including ‘Crash Programme’ with a view to reducing session jam.  “The NU is working to improve the overall academic atmosphere. But it will not be possible if blockade and hartal continue. At least 20 lakh students will be the victims of the violent political programmes,” Prof Harun said.
