Amid widespread corruption allegations and leak of a phone conversation of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) vice-chancellor Prof Rafiqul Hoque with a female employee, the education minister is likely to ask the controversial vice-chancellor to step down. The minister has decided to invite Prof Rafiqul Hoque to tea at his office today (Wednesday). “Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has
decided to take stern action against the VC by asking him to resign immediately,” sources said. “Offering tea to Hoque, the minister will ask the BAU VC to submit his resignation,” said an official of the ministry. The minister took the decision to invite the VC to a tea party while holding a meeting with leaders Democratic Teachers Forum (DTF), a pro-government platform of BAU academia, at the Secretariat on Tuesday. Apart from ministry officials, DTA leaders including Prof AKM Shamsuddin and Prof Paresh Chandra Modak were present in the meeting. DTF leaders, after the meeting, told daily sun that the minister informed them that he will invite the VC in a tea-party on Wednesday and would ask Hoque to step down. Seeking anonymity, officials concerned at the ministry also confirmed the matter. The ministry also decided to send an investigation team, comprising University Grants Commi-ssion (UGC) members Mohabbat Khan and Abul Hashem, ministry’s joint secretary Zikrur Reja Khanam and UGC officer Nazrul Islam, to BAU today. Sources at the ministry said that the education minister doesn’t want to see Hoque at the top position at BAU due to his alleged moral degradation and widespread corruption. “This is the reason why the minister is trying to gear-up the investigation process against Hoque. As the investigation is a lengthy process, the minister will ask the VC to resign from his post,” said a source at the ministry. It was leant that DTF leaders have submitted documents of multifaceted misdeeds of the BAU VC to Nahid during the meeting. After holding meeting with Nahid, the DTF leaders also met UGC chairman Prof AK Azad Chowdhury at his office on the same day. Participants at the meeting said that the UGC boss also assured the DTF leaders of taking harsh steps against Hoque. “It cannot be accepted that such a controversial man is holding the top position at a public university,” a source quoted UGC chairman Azad Chowdhury as saying. Misdeeds of Hoque came in fore after leak of some audio clips on March 17. After the event, most of the BAU teachers started waging movement against the VC demanding his resignation. They also brought allegation of corruption, bribery and unethical activities against the VC. Academic activities of the varsity have been plunged in deep crisis due to the misdeeds of Hoque. The Daily Sun also published a news report in its Tuesday’s issue on the alleged misdeeds of the BAU VC.
