Candidates reach out to voters on last day:Daily Sun

The candidates for the elections to the Dhaka south and Dhaka north city corporations and their agents passed a busy day on Sunday, the last day of electioneering, making their final appeals to voters to elect them, reports UNB. With the campaign deadline ending at midnight on Sunday, all the mayoral and councillor candidates and their supporters put in their frantic efforts to reach out to their
voters in different areas to woo them. Most candidates staged big showdowns, bringing out processions in their respective areas. Awami League-supported mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Annisul Huq began his electioneering from Mohakhali bus stand in the city. Addressing a rally there, he called upon the voters to elect the most eligible candidate who has the ability to work for the welfare of the city dwellers. A clear viewpoint is required to bring the desired change in political culture and Dhaka, he said. Accusing his rivals of spreading propaganda against him to malign him, he urged the voters no to get confused about him and cast their votes for him. In the evening, he went to the residence of his one the rivals Mahi B Chowdhury at Baridhara who was injured in an attack by unknown men on early Sunday. Annisul talked to Mahi’s wife as he was not available at home. BNP-blessed mayoral candidate for DNCC Tabith Awal started his last day’s campaign ahead of the city polls from Bashtola at Shahzadpur in the city around 8am. Talking to reporters during the campaign, he again expressed his doubt about fair polls and said, “It’s still possible to ensure a healthy election atmosphere if the Election Commission wants.” Tabith called upon the voters to go to the polling stations without any fear and exercise their franchise. After electioneering in Bashtola, he distributed leaflets among voters in Badda Hossain Market, Merul Badda, Rampura Bazar, Chowdhurypara, and Malibagh rail gate, Moghbazar, Eskaton, Banglamotor, Karwan Bazar and Farmgate areas, and sought votes in favour of his election symbol ‘Bus’. Later in the afternoon, Tabith campaigned near Shaymoly Cinema Hall, in Kallayanpur, Mirpur-1, Mirpur College, Purobi Cinema Hall, Mirpur-10, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Taltola Government Staff College, Tejgaon Nabisco Mor and Mohakhali bus stand areas. In the evening, he conducted his final campaign in Khilkhet, Rajlokkhi Complex and Muscat Plaza in Uttara, Banani kitchen market, Government Titumir College, Gulshan-1 and Niketon areas. Ruling party-blessed mayoral runner for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Sayeed Khokon started his last day’s election campaign from a street rally at Jatrabari. Speaking at the rally he claimed himself a clean man and promised to establish a corruption-free Nagar Bhaban if he is elected mayor in the city corporation election. “I’m a clean man. There’s no allegation of corruption against me as well as my family. Everyone knows about my father Mohammad Hanif’s (first elected Dhaka City mayor) contributions to city people. I’ll work with the mass people and employees of Nagar Bhaban to turn it in a corruption-free place,” he said. Pledging to work with rivals and people of different opinions, Khokon said he will work with all and involve people of all strata and even his rivals to build a new Dhaka city. Later the rally, he conducted electioneering at North Jatrabari and Shampur Thana at ward no 47, 48, 49, 50 53, 54 flanked by local Awami League leaders and his supporters. Sayeed Khokon held a press conference in evening at Bangabandhu Avenue where he said a ‘Dhaka Dialogue’ will be held on the first day with the people of all strata, including his rival Mirza Abbas, if he is elected mayor. “I will hold the Dhaka Dialogue with the people of all strata with a view to resolving the problems of the city,” he added. BNP-sponsored DSCC polls mayoral candidate Mirza Abbas’ wife Afroza Abbas started her electioneering in city’s Siddheswari area and Stamford University in the morning. During the campaign, she said if the media and the people consider the election fair one, Mirza Abbas will accept whatever the result comes. She also said, “People and media are our strength. We’ll accept the results if they say the polls are fair.” Earlier in the day, she went to the residence of noted jurist Barrister Rafiqul Haque to hold a meeting with him. She also exchanged views and sought vote in Paltan, Arambagh, Fakirapul, and several banks in Dilkusha and Motijheel area in the afternoon to seek vote for her husband at the last moment. Zonayed Abdur Rahman Saki, another mayoral aspirant for DNCC, launched his electioneering from Lalmatia area in the morning. During his campaign, Saki said as people want a change in country’s politics they will start it from the corporation election polls. Saki also sought votes in favour of his electoral symbol ‘Telescope’ across the Dhaka north city, including Tajmahal and Salimullah Road in Mohammadpur, Journalists Colony in Mirpur, Kalshi, and Rampura. CPB-BSD-supported mayor candidate for DNCC, Abdullah Al Kafee also passed a busy day by campaigning in Tejgaon, Mohakhali, Badda, Bannani, Gulshan and Uttara areas to woo voters at the last hour of electioneering.
