Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday asked the officials and employees of Biman Bangladesh Airlines to improve its passenger services to make it profitable, reports UNB. “You’ll have to gain the trust of passengers and maintain the flight schedules for upholding the national flag carrier’s reputation,” she said. rminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. “Biman is not only a service-providing airliner, but also a commercial organisation…it has to be profitable through its professional services,” the Prime Minister told the function. Sheikh Hasina emphasised the introduction of cargo flights to make the national airliner a profitable one. “It’s not possible to make it profitable one without operating cargo flights on domestic and international routes.” In this regard, she said Biman has huge prospects of carrying processed agricultural and food products to foreign destinations where a huge number of expatriate Bangladeshis are working and living. The Prime Minister asked the Biman authorities to introduce new routes at the regional level where the trade and commerce with Bangladesh has potentials. “We could run our flights to nearer destinations where the flight time will be around three to four hours. We have to find out these destinations where the trade and commerce have great potentials,” she said. In this connection, Hasina said Biman will have to find newer routes in countries of East Asia and East Europe like Vietnam, then Philippines, Laos and Cambodia. About the ground handling at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport which is done by Biman, the Prime Minister said its standard needs to be improved much. “If this is not possible for it (Biman) alone, then there should be a move to search a partner in this connection, but this ground handling should be of international standard.” Hasina said the government has planned to make Syedpur and Cox’s Bazar airports as international ones, and mentioned that talks were held with Bhutan authorities to use Syedpur International Airport on completion of its upgradation. Besides, the opportunity for investment is increasing as an EPZ has been set up in Syedpur while the government is establishing a special economic zone in northern region of the country, she said. Regarding the Cox’s Bazar airport, the Prime Minister said that the importance of Cox’s Bazar among the tourists is huge as this is the only 125 kilometer unbroken sandy sea beach of the world. Referring to the longest sea beach of the world in Cox’s Bazar, Sheikh Hasina said huge tourists could be attracted and Cox’s Bazar International Airport could play a very important role to this end. The airport could be used as a transit for the fights from the East to the West and also from the West to the East for refuelling, she said. Describing various initiatives for the development of countries airports, Hasina said facilities are being expanded at Hazrat Shahjalal International airport while steps have been taken to construct the third terminal and second runway there. About increasing the capacity of carrying passengers by the National Flag carrier, the Prime Minister said four Boeing 777-300 ER modern aircraft were added to Biman’s fleet, while Boeing 777-200 ER aircrafts have been collected on lease from Egypt. Besides, two new Boeing 737-800 ER aircraft would be added to its fleet this year while Boeing authorities would hand over four 787-8 aircraft in 2019 and 2020, she said. She reminded that the national flag carrier is not only a service-providing organization, but also a commercial one. “It’ll have to maintain the success it achieved by re-introducing domestic routes in seven destinations in the country.” Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon, Chairman of the Biman Board of Directors Air Marshal (retd) Jamal Uddin Ahmed, Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Khurshed Alam Chowdhury and Biman Managing Director & CEO Kyle Haywood also spoke at the programme. Biman included the aircraft to its fleet taking on lease from Egyptian Smart Aviation for next five years to run its domestics and some regional flights. Apart from increasing flights on the existing domestic routes— Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet, Biman will start flight operations between Dhaka and five more domestic destinations—Cox’s Bazar, Jessore, Rajshahi, Syedpur and Barisal—on Monday. The national flag carrier will operate six flights to Cox’s Bazar, five to Jessore, three to both Rajshahi and Syedpur and two to Barisal. Under the programme, Biman will operate more than 120 flights a week within the country to carry 12,000 passengers.
