BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is back home at last empty-handed after 92 days of futile movement resulting in deaths of about 150 innocent people, injuries to many others and colossal loss of national economy. She had been staying in her party office at Gulshan since January 3 and did not come out even to go to the Shaheed Minar on February 21 and the National Mausoleum at Savar on the Independence
Day on March 26. Coming out of Gulshan office for the first time in three months, Khaleda Zia appeared before the court at Bakshibazar in the capital in two graft cases on Sunday and was granted bail. There were massive security arrangements on the road from Gulshan to Bakshibazar and at the court premises for Khaleda. From the court, she went straight to her Gulshan residence in the city. She is now set to be engaged in open political activities, including the campaign for her selected candidates in city elections. According to sources, the people fed up with the violence, anarchy and petrol bomb attacks in the name of movement by the BNP-led 20 party alliance, have heaved a sigh of relief as the tense political situation appears to have eased considerably following decline in the trend of conflict and the ultimate return of Khaleda to her sweet home after appearing in court as well as her party’s decision to join the city polls. Meanwhile, a vital question is being raised widely in her party and the alliance as to what the BNP Chairperson has achieved from the three months of blockade-hartal and anarchy. Many members of her own party feel that the violent movement virtually has turned into a futile exercise causing unnecessary deaths of innocent people and unbearable sufferings to the party activists. The lesson received is that no movement can attain the goal unless it is participated by the people. The BNP leaders were divided over Khaleda’s decision on leaving her office. Some of them said it is her good decision. On the other hand, some others said Khaleda Zia should return to her office and stay there until achieving victory in their ongoing movement. “Her return to the residence leaving the office will create negative impact on the grassroots and they will lose confidence,” a leader said. However, a number of party leaders said the party men felt comfort as their leader Khaleda Zia returned home from her office. Meanwhile, BNP activists see no ‘achievement’ in the party’s movement which continued for the last three months to realize the demand for early general elections under non-party administration. It is learnt from the party insiders that the BNP party high command is worried over the future of their movement as they could neither force the government to accept the demand for early election, nor compel it to agree to hold dialogue to resolve the crisis. Talking to daily sun a number of central leaders of BNP said comfortable situation has come back through Khaleda’s return to the residence but there is no achievement in their movement that continued for last three months. The BNP has been caught in a storm of criticism by its own activists as most of them think that the chairperson has returned home almost empty handed after three months of hard and painstaking movement. It is said that this time also the BNP has failed in the movement. A question has been raised as to why the deaths of about 150 innocent people were caused in the movement then. Some of the BNP activists suspect that against the backdrop of failure in the movement, a secret understanding with the government has been made to tackle the situation. They also ask what is now the reply to the forced disappearance of party leader Salauddin Ahmed and sufferings of thousands of party activists. Some of the activists accuse the pro-BNP intellectuals as their advice prompted the party to join the city polls. It is also alleged that the BNP has taken the exit through a secret deal with the government. The rank and file of the BNP are disappointed over the latest situation.
