In a significant shift in her earlier stand, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has at last decided to appear today before the court in the two graft cases and seek bail. According to sources, if her bail is granted by the court, she will decide whether to return to her Gulshan office or the residence depending on the situation, especially the attitude of the government. “The BNP chairperson will leave h
er Gulshan office at 9:30am to go to court. If she gets bail, she will return to her residence at Gulshan,” Shamsuddin Didar, a member of Khaleda’s press wing, said on Saturday night. She would appear before the makeshift court in Bakhshibazar Alia Madrasa ground. Khaleda Zia has been staying at her office for the last three months and she had appeared before the court on only seven occasions during the 63 dates of hearing of the Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust graft cases. “As Khaleda Zia is respectful of the law, she will appear in the court in the morning on Sunday,” her lawyer Sanaullah Mia told daily sun on Saturday. Asked whether she would go to the BNP central office or return to her residence from the court, he replied, “I don’t know about this. It’s her own decision where she will go after appearing in court.” BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said, “She (Khaleda) may go to the court but it will depend on the situation.” Asked where she will go after returning from the court, he said “I don’t know.” Another standing committee member of the BNP Mahbubur Rahman said, “Khaleda Zia is a citizen of an independent, sovereign and democratic country, she will go anywhere she wants, after retuning from the court.” A leader of the party said, “If Khaleda Zia faces any unexpected incident on her way to the court or the government put her office under lock and key, then she may take any decision depending on the situation.” Khaleda Zia is facing an arrest warrant issued by the court on February 25 in the two graft cases, but did not appear before the court on March 4, citing security reasons. BNP sources said the party chairperson may also go to the party central office in Nayapaltan today after appearing in the court. Then she may return to her residence ‘Firoza’ in Gulshan. Some BNP leaders said this is a chance for the BNP chairperson to leave the office as they think it is not necessary to stay in the office anymore as the party is now joining the upcoming elections to the three city corporations. Meanwhile, a high official of police said on condition of anonymity, that as per the directive given to them till Saturday night, Khaleda Zia will not be allowed to return to her office again and she will be sent to her residence. But he does not know what will be the decision on Sunday, the official added. Due to BNP’s decision to participate in city elections, the party has withdrawn hartal from Dhaka and Chittagong cities. Consequently, the necessity of Khaleda Zia’s stay in Gulshan office has ended. Discussions were going on inside and outside the party as to when she will leave the Gulshan office. Against such a backdrop, Khaleda’s lawyers advised her to appear before the court. In fact, through the appearance before the court the way will be paved for her return to her residence after leaving the Gulshan office. Meanwhile, the BNP central office, which remained locked for the last 91 days, came to life, as the BNP leaders and workers unlocked the office on Saturday evening. A group of party leaders and activists led by BNP assistant office secretary Asadul Karim Shaheen entered the office at Nayapaltan in the capital at around 7:30pm. The party office had remained locked since the police picked up the party joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on the night on January 3. “The locked office had been under the control of police for the last three months, but we did not receive any key from the law enforcers. Finally, we entered the office at around 7:30pm after cutting open the lock with a hacksaw,” Shaheen told daily sun. Party sources said police personnel deployed at the central office of BNP were withdrawn on Friday. During these three months, no party leaders or workers turned up at the party office. The law enforcers also did not allow the office employees to stay there, party sources said.
