More than one hundred aspirants contesting the upcoming elections to the posts of councillors in 93 wards under two Dhaka city corporations are facing various charges, including murder. On Tuesday, the first day of the electioneering, all of them embarked on campaigns, assuring the city dwellers of putting an end to drug trade, violence, extortion and tender manipulation as well as pledging to ens
ure civic amenities in their respective wards under the Dhaka North City and South City Corporations. But ironically, many of them who are making these commitments are themselves accused of such crimes. There are cases pending with the police stations against many of the candidates. The city dwellers fear that the two city corporations would be turned into havens of plunder, if the identified criminals are elected. An investigation into the backgrounds of the candidates reveals that many councillor hopefuls are involved in criminal activities. And over 100 controversial candidates are in the election race. Most of them are involved in tender manipulation, land grabbing and drug trade. There is an instance of a candidate having 18 cases against him while there is also an example of a candidate contesting the elections after being relieved of 23 cases. The ward No. 10 of Dhaka North City Corporation comprises areas like Gabtali, Zaminder Bari (Hasnabad), Gabtali Gaidertek 1st, 2nd and 3rd colonies and Mazar road. Sramik League leader Abu Taher is a councillor candidate in this ward. Local people alleged that he is involved in extortion in transport sector. However, Abu Taher denied the allegation and said, “I myself or my men are not involved in any kind of extortion. I never resorted to such practice.” Another candidate in this ward is Masud Khan, a BNP leader and a former commissioner, who faces three cases filed with Kafrul, Pallabi and Mirpur model thanas. Sabbir Dewan Jony is a councillor aspirant from Kafrul area. There are allegations of drug trade and violence against him. He faces seven cases. Laskar Mohammad Tasnim is another candidate from the same ward. Three cases against him are under trial. Former commissioner Jalal Mostofa is reportedly accused in five cases. But he claimed that he has been acquitted in all the cases. There are allegations of drug business, land grabbing and extortion against Kazi Faridul Huq, a councillor candidate in ward No. 12. There are two cases against him with Kalabagan thana of the capital. Faridul Huq, however, denied the charges. In the same way, many other councillor candidates in the two city corporations are facing various charges of corrupt practices and criminal activities. The list of such people is very long.
