Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has termed BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s return home as victory for her government saying she went back home after wrapping up her three-month oust-government movement. “She has returned home with the agony of defeat after surrendering before the court,” she said while exchanging views with Dhaka city Awami League leaders at her official residence Ganabhaban on Tuesday. “It
is proved again that people did not accept their movement of killing by hurling bombs,” Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the ruling Awami League, said. Khaleda returned home from her Gulshan political office on Sunday. She had been staying there for three months after announcing non-stop countrywide blockade on January 5 in demand for midterm polls. “She (khaleda Zia) thought she would come out of her office after unseating the government but she failed to do it in 92 days of her movement,” the premier said. Asking the party leaders and activists to resist anti-state activities of Khaleda Zia, she said, “This is the victory of the people and it should be upheld so that none can hinders the country’s development.” Sheikh Hasina also thanked Dhaka city unit party leaders and activists for their constant efforts to foil BNP-Jamaat attempts to carry out subversive activities in the capital. The premier said people win every time against any sort of conspiracy against the country’s interest. “Human rights violators, miscreants and militants never win the race,” she said. Bitterly criticizing the BNP-Jamaat activities, the premier said her government creates while the BNP-Jamaat alliance destroys. “BNP’s politics is to loot public money and hinder the country’s progress.” “We have also launched many movements in the past with the support of the people. Many of our party men died during those movements. But we saw killing of many innocent people during Khaleda’s 92 days’ movement,” she said. Later, the Awami League president sat for a closed-door meeting with the presidents and secretaries of the party’s city ward units. The leaders presented their views before the premier on how to make the Awami League-backed mayoral and councilor candidates win in the upcoming city elections. Sources said the premier directed the leaders to work together to ensure win of the party-backed candidates. “Candidates, who will get party support, will only be able to contest the city corporation polls. Others should work for the party-backed candidates,” she said. Party insiders say that the list of councilor candidates will be finalised within a day or two. She also issued a note of warning against those who will contest polls breaching party discipline. “Organisational action will be taken against those who will contest the city polls in violation of the party discipline,” she added. The prime minister also directed the city unit party leaders to work hard the AL-backed mayor candidates so that they could get highest votes in their respective areas. “Highlight the development activities being carried out in the capital before the voters,” she said, adding that her government has solved the crisis of power, water and gas. “We have already carried out many projects for development of the capital. Our capital can now be compared with the cities of many developed countries,” the premier said.
