Domestic violence rises sharply:Daily Sun

Family crimes are on the rise in the country for strained ties with conjugal feuds, household unrest, illicit relations, drug addiction and failure in examinations causing spurt in incidents of suicide and murders. According to sources, on an average some 13 murders and 29 incidents of suicide are taking place daily. As many as 1,18,192 cases were filed under the Women and Children Repression Act
in the country during the period from 2010 to May15, 2015. Heartrending and unwarranted incidents like murder, suicide, family break-up etc. are taking place every day. Family and social crimes are assuming menacing proportions with the women and children being their main victims. Crime analysis has shown that the incidents of conjugal feuds, persecution, illicit relations and divorce have increased alarmingly in the last one year. Along with that, killings have occurred one after another. According to the statistics of police, during the period from 2010 to May 15, 2015, as many as 1,18,192 cases have been lodged under the Women and Children Repression Act and over 10,000 cases for murder. The number of cases filed for women and children persecution was 17,752 in 2010, 21,389 in 2011, then 20,947 in 2012, some 19,601 in 2013 and 21, 291 in 2014.    As a sequel to the family quarrel, 13 people on an average are being killed and some 29 people are committing suicide every day in the country. On an average, 57 women are being persecuted every day.  The law enforcers, social scientists, psychologists and criminologists maintain that panic has been created among the people due to rise of incidents of suicide alongside the murders. In their opinion, such incidents are increasing for slackening and weakening of family bondage and self-centred attitude of the people. Restlessness and despair are increasing in public life and people are becoming intolerant. The extent of family crimes is more in urban areas and among the affluent people. IGP A K M Shahidul Huq said some steps have been taken to stop social crimes. The activities of community police will be enhanced in this regard, he added. Professor Zinat Huda of Dhaka University sociology department said these crimes are taking place as family bond has been weakened. Financial constraints, extra-marital relations and drug addiction are leading to crimes like murder or suicide. “To get rid of this restive situation the family and social ties have to be strengthened,” she added. Police officials said it is not possible to control the social crimes as the legal provisions against the criminals are weak. A law titled ‘Family Violence Resistance and Protection Act 2010’ was passed in 2010, but it is not being enforced properly. Joint Commissioner of DMP Monirul Islam said along with the proper enforcement of law to contain crimes, awareness about crimes has to be enhanced and social movement against the criminals must be organised.
