The large scale human trafficking from Bangladesh is conducted in four phases starting from Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas of Cox’s Bazar district. According to sources, most of the members of the syndicate engaged in human trafficking through Cox’s Bazar are relatives or close associates of Abdur Rahman Bodi, MP while leaders of the Awami League, the Jubo League and the BNP are involved in transactio
ns of money. The smuggling of the ‘sacks’ is conducted in four phases. It is learnt that human trafficking begins through Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas of Cox’s Bazar. Falling in the trap of the agents, many get on the trawlers willingly while others are taken to the waiting trawlers for trafficking. Those who go willingly pay the money to the agents in advance on the assurance of arrangements for their safe arrival in Malaysia. On the other hand, each of the kidnapped persons is sold out by the agents at Tk 20,000 to the fishing boat owners or the specific syndicate. This is described by them as ‘sale of sacks’. Each person sold out for trafficking is identified by them as sack. Trawlers or some other syndicates keep on waiting in the mid-sea to purchase those people. The owners of the fishing boats sale out the people in the boat to those trawler owners or the syndicates. Thus the people are sold several times before they can reach Thailand and Malaysia. In this way, the traffickers realise up to Tk 2.80 lakh per head to take every person to Malaysia. Those who fail to pay the money are left over in the sea or taken to the deep forests and killed. The payment of the money for trafficking is made through hundi and banks. A share of the money also allegedly goes to the pockets of politicians and police. It is gathered that a large number of people are taken in the trawlers every night for trafficking from Cox’s Bazar to Malaysia with the direct and indirect help of the ruling party MP from Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhiya-Teknaf) Abdur Rahman Bodi and his relatives, the leaders of Ukhiya and Teknaf upazila Awami League leaders and the police personnel. The trafficking has been continuing since 2000. Following the path set by Rohingya citizen Tazar Mulluk, a large number of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis willingly or being victims of kidnapping get on the trawlers floating in the sea. In the sector of human trafficking on waterways, an amount of Tk 3,300 crore has been transacted as ransom. Many of the victims of trafficking died on the way. Some have drowned while some others landed in the mass graves of deep forests in Thailand. But due to the tactics of Cox’s Bazar district police and the Awami League leaders, the godfathers of human trafficking are remaining out of dragnet. Although the law enforcers know the names of the kingpins of human trafficking and their mentors and patrons, those are not coming in the intelligence reports. However, it has been revealed through media investigation that the relatives and the associates of MP Bodi are involved in human trafficking and hundi business syndicate.
