At least six people, including a woman, were killed and over 15 others injured when a covered van rammed a running train across the inland container depot at Kamalapur in the capital on Monday. The accident occurred as the goods-laden vehicle hit a bogie of Dhaka-bound local train from Narayanganj defying signal at 1:00pm, leaving two dead on the spot, said Abdul Mazid, officer-in-charge of Kamal
apur railway police station. Of the victims, three were named as Mujibur Rahman, madrasa student Nayeem Islam and Alamgir Hossain while identities of two males, aged between 30 and 35, and a woman, aged about 38, could not be known immediately. Four of the injured succumbed to their injuries on way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Mazid said, adding that the death toll may rise. Bodies of five victims were kept at DMCH morgue for autopsies, said Insp Mozammel Haque, in-charge of DMCH police outpost. DMCH sources said a total of 11 injured were admitted to the hospital. About the total number of the injured, Mazid said, “We can’t tell the exact figures of the injured as some of them were admitted to local clinics.” On information, nine units of firemen rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. Hours after the incident, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque visited the spot. He told journalists that, “We’re sorry for the untoward accident… the driver of the lorry is responsible for the deadly accident as he shrugged off the signal.” The minister also visited the injured at DMCH and also distributed Tk 20,000 among six injured each. There, he told journalists that financial aid will also be provided to the families of those killed. During a spot visit, it was seen that the train dragged the lorry around 50 yards from the spot and the lorry was fully damaged. The train also derailed that snapped rail communications for over five hours. “Two Ansar members were deployed at the crossing. They also signalled the lorry but its driver flouted the sign, causing the deadly accident. Ansar member Mizanur Rahman also sustained injuries,” Mazid went on. Meanwhile, senior deputy assistant engineer of Bangladesh Railway Abdul Matin Mondol filed a case with Kamalapur GRP against the trucker for reckless driving, causing so many lives and damaging public property. Besides, a three-member probe panel, led by Nazmul Islam, divisional railway transportation officer, has been formed to investigate the incident and submit its report within three days. Lawmen, however, could not arrest the driver till the filing of this report at around 8:30pm.
