NSU set to sink for misdeeds:Daily Sun

North South University (NSU) is on the verge of collapse for widespread irregularities and misdeeds by former chairman and incumbent Trustee Board member Shahjahan and vice-chancellor Prof Aminuddin. There are allegations that they are engaged in unprecedented corruption and forgeries in a sheer violation of rules and regulations of the private varsity. Teachers and students alleged that they are
only busy with themselves to amass wealth and they are running the university as per their wish, reports banglanews24.com. The university is not getting expected number of students though it once used to the first choice for many admission seekers. The university authorities are now considering enrolling students without admission test from the next academic session, informed a teacher at the university. A question has been raised among the conscious teachers, officials, students and guardians that given the widespread irregularities, corruptions, forgeries how todays NSU is any different from a university black-listed by the UGC? Who is responsible for the severe damage to the universitys reputation earned over the last 22 years? they asked. Many teachers and students of the university informed that vice chancellor Aminuddin Sarkar and trustee board member Shahjahan are responsible for the sorry state of the university. Teachers of the university do not get any scope to have their say on anything relating to the activities of the university. The committees of the university cannot play any effective role as per the statutory law of the university and the private university act. The NSU VC does not pay heed to any decision of the committee. The VC himself oversees major tasks such as admission of students, appointing officials and staffs, salary fixation and hike. But none dares to raise voice against his decisions in fear of losing job. The VC has recently threatened the teachers and officials that if anyone differs with his decision, he/she will be relieved of job immediately. At a meeting with deans and chairmen, he declared, In the past, I fired many people from service at the university. So there will be no exception during my office as a VC of NSU. Some aggravated teachers of the university informed the matter to the board of trustee. Asked about this matter, the VC said, This is just a rumour. It has been learnt that the VC appoints his chosen persons no matter what qualifications they have. Similarly, he suspends anyone from job as per his will. If anyone takes stand against their misdeeds, he or she faces serious consequences. The NSU VC recently sacked Pro-VC Dr A N M Meskat Uddin as he took stand against the irregularities of Shahjahan. There seem to be some legal complications awaiting the NSU for sacking him illegally without following the private university act. A teacher of the university said VC Aminuddin Sarkar secured second classes in his academic life. He earned his degree in Soil Science from Dhaka University. He started his career as a forest officer. Later, he did his Phd in Economics from the US. This is now a hot topic at the NSU campus that how a former forest officer could be a VC. And everyone is wondering why he is being paid Tk 16 lakh per month as remuneration. It has also been learnt that nearly 20,000 students are studying in North South University. There is no accountability and transparency of the fund of the university although huge amount of fees are charged from the students. Many students, teachers and guardians are saying that trustee board member Shahjahan has turned the institution into a business entity in the name of educational institution. The whole university has been held hostage by the autocratic attitude of Shahjahan. He has withdrawn several hundred crores of taka from the fund of the university and spent as per his own will. On condition of anonymity, a teacher alleged that though fund is supposed to be deposited to the trustee fund for the greater interest of NSU, there is no transparency in the whereabouts of the fund. Teachers of the university do get the scope to do Phd in foreign university for lack of funds. The funds of the university are also not spent for the poor and meritorious students. Where does all that money go? he asked. There are also irregularities in appointing teachers. It has also been alleged that there is no specific salary structure for the teachers. Even there is no job security. Teachers are appointed in one-year contract. Uncertainty arises over the renewal of job if any teacher speaks against the VC. Preferring not to be named, a former NSU teacher who was involved in the admission process of the university said a total of 2300 students (admission seekers) appeared for the admission test of the summer semester (2014). The pass mark of the admission test was 60, which was later brought down to 25. In such a way, some 1400 students got the opportunity to take admission in NSU. Some 450 students who failed to obtain even 25 marks in the admission test were also enrolled at the university. The former teacher said earlier NSU had a good standard as only some 25 percent students used to get the chance of admission in the university. The present situation of this university is so deplorable that students are not even interested to take admission here as some 80 percent admission seekers get the chances to get admission at the university. It was learnt that at a recent meeting of admission committee, NSU VC Aminuddin proposed for the admission of students without any test. A number of teachers opposed the proposal of the VC. The, however, remained strict in his decision and said there will be no admission test from the next semester. A teacher who was present at the meeting lamented that the UGC made a blacklist of private varsities to ensure the standard of education of private universities, adding The extent to which the NSU is now engaged in irregularities, what difference left between the NSU and a black-listed university?
