Only 1059, out of 13 lakh, flood-hit farmers get govt assistance:Daily Sun

  Only 1,059, out of 13 lakh, flood-affected farmers are getting government assistance to recoup losses of their crops in the recent floods. The government are distributing rice seedlings among flood-affected farmers of Sariakandi, Bogra, Kurigram, Sunamganj and Jamalpur to recover the losses. They started the distribution last week and continued till September 23, according to a statement of the
Department of Agriculture Extension. Over 1,348,561 farmers were affected by floods caused by heavy rainfall and onrush of upstream water. The government is yet to take any comprehensive rehabilitation programme for the affected farmers though the floodwaters receded from the areas over 15 days ago. This year floods have damaged crops worth Tk 1, 592 crore in 28 districts, according to the DAE count. The affected districts are Madaripur, Rajbari, Faridpur, Manikganj, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Kurigram, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Natore, Bogra, Sirajganj, Sunamganj, Sylhet, Habiganj, Munshiganj, Jamalpur, Shariatpur, Tangail, Sherpur, Netrokona, Mymensingh, Chittagong, Khagrachhari and Kishoreganj. Flood victims have been suffering a continuous hardship after the flood as they cannot find job immediately, and by then they have lost their livestock and crops. DAE deputy director (monitoring) Rafiqul Hasan told daily sun they are distributing Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) seedlings among the farmers. They have been distributing seedlings of BR 22, BR 23, Ganjia(local), Bri 34 and Nazirshal among 387 farmers of Sariakandi upazial in Bogra. BR 22, BR 23 and Ganjia(local) among 146 farmers of Kazipur upazila in Sirajganj, Nazirshal, BR 22, Bri rice 46, Bina rice 16, Puti Sharna, Malsia(local), Ganjia (local), and Jaldhapa (local) among 212 farmers of Kurigram Sadar upazial, Nazirshal, Bri rice 49, 56, 22 and 23, BR 11 and Binashail among 137 farmers of Jagannathpur Upazila in Sunamganj, BR 23, Bina rice 16 and 11, Binashail and Ganjia (local) among 200 farmers of Islampur upazial in Jamalpur. Aman rice, vegetables, sugarcane, jute, corn, lemon and banana fields were damaged mostly by the flooding, according to the DAE. Ropa Aman worth Tk 1248.86 crore, Bona Aman worth Tk 117.23 crore, Aous worth Tk 41.31 crore, vegetables worth Tk 133.71 crore were destroyed in the floodwaters. In 28 districts, 11 types of crops were cultivated on 20.12 lakh hectares of land of which crops on 2.66 lakh hectares were affected.
