Technical education trails with untrained teachers:Daily Sun

It sounds surprising that the authorities are yet to train teachers on the creative system in three tiers of technical education—SSC vocational, HSC vocational and HSC BCom—since 2011, making it a nightmare to students. Secondary and higher education directorate says teachers of other institutions and madrasas than technical units have been receiving training under secondary education sector dev
elopment project being implemented by DSHE. An acute shortage of trained teachers on creative system hits students hard as untrained teachers are facing problems in making questions, taking exams and evaluating answer scripts. A 2012 statistic of education ministry shows that nearly 25,000 teachers are employed in technical institutions. Of them, half the teachers have been teaching creative methods without having a proper guideline or knowledge. Some vocational teachers told daily sun that they have difficulty delivering lectures in classroom and evaluating answer scripts which virtually hamper students’ academic career. For a distinct lack of skills over the new system, vocational students are getting deprived of pursuing education in their respective courses, they claimed. Contacted, Khagrachhari Technical School and College principal said, “There is no alternative but to train teachers over the creative system, particularly on basic subjects like physics, chemistry, Bangla and business entrepreneurship. But we couldn’t receive training on the creative system yet.” Relevant state bodies are boasting of the government’s work towards making a better technical ground in the country. But the grim picture is this arena of education still remains out of full state consideration. The national education policy has also directed to give special importance to this sector, but it is still limping along with amateurish teachers. “Basic subjects of technical education are creative from the very beginning and teachers don’t need training. But those teaching general subjects need training on the new system. We are working hard to bring them under the project,” said DSHE Director General Fahima Khatun. “The government has stressed the importance of technical education and we will get all the teachers trained as soon as possible,” she told this correspondent. Sources said technical education board has requested the ministry concerned, the directorate and the SEDP project director separately to train teachers. “It’s necessary to have basic training to cope up with the creative method. We try to train teachers on our own resources but it’s tough to train them with our limited funds and manpower,” said Prof Abul Kashem, chairman of technical education board. Several rounds of dialogues have been held with the ministry and DSHE to this end, he mentioned. “They assured us that they will include vocational teachers under their training project soon.” A board data reveals that basic subject of technical education is creative from the very beginning. But the government introduced creative method in Bangla, social science, physics, religious studies, self-employment, chemistry and business entrepreneurship in SSC while Bangla, chemistry, physics in HSC course.
