Zia grabbed state power illegally: PM:Daily Sun

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina answers various questions in parliament on Wednesday. PID Photo Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday accused BNP founder Ziaur Rahman of assuming the office of the president illegally after killing Bangabandhu and most of his family members. “It is true that Ziaur Rahman illegally grabbed the post of the president after killing Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and h
is family members on August 15 in 1975,” Hasina told parliament in reply to a question of reserved-seat lawmaker Fazilatun Nessa Bappy. The day’s business began at about 7:00pm with JS Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair. The premier said Ziaur Rahman repeatedly obstructed the efforts made by her and her sister Sheikh Rehana when they had tried to return home after the brutal killing of Bangabandhu. “But, I was the first to issue a statement of condemnation after the killing of Zia,” she said. The premier said that she heard the news of Zia’s murder when she was at Akhaura, on her way to Dhaka from Sylhet. “The rail communication was snapped on that day, but I sent a statement from Bhairab. The key message of the statement was to run the country as per the Constitution,” she said. Sheikh Hasina said by issuing the statement, she tried to prevent the army officials from grabbing the state power illegally. Responding a supplementary question, the premier said her government brought an amendment to the Constitution that none could usurp state power illegally. The premier said Awami League carried out movement to establish the rights of the people and build a Bangladesh with the spirit of independence. “As I wanted to do so, I was attacked several times. But I have been discharging my responsibilities ignoring all the threats,” she said, adding that she would not bow down to none except the Almighty Allah.
