Brisk preparations by AL grassroots:Daily Sun

Ahead of the completion of present Awami League government’s one year in power, the BNP-led 20 party alliance may launch a tough movement from January for ousting the government and realising mid-term elections. In this regard the intelligence agencies have given advance pre-cautionary messages that in course of the ferocity of this movement the country may return to the pre-January 5 election s
ituation. To resist such a situation AL is giving stress on reorganising the party. Directives have been issued to complete conferences and councils of the party at all district, upazila, union and ward levels by December next. A letter relating to this signed by AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam has been sent on Monday to the presidents and secretaries of the party’s 73 organisational districts and the upazilas, unions and wards therein. Deputy-office secretary Mrinal Kanti Das has confirmed this to the news media. Besides, the leaders of some organisational districts also have admitted the reception of the letters. Opposition politicians as well as some leaders of AL itself, its leftist allies and Jatiya Party leaders and analysts think that the anti-government movement will start from the next January. The month of January 2015 will be turbulent in Bangladesh politics, they think. Besides, in a recent meeting of 20-party alliance BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has asked the alliance partners to take preparations for mid-term polls. When wanted to know about this, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that before January 5 election AL had said that it was an election of formality. They promised to hold another election to be participated by all immediately after the January 5 polls. But later AL leaders backtracked from their promise. Now normal situation will not retun to the country if another election is not held. About BNP’s movement after one year of AL rule Mirza Fakhrul said “We are already amid movement. But the movement will be stronger in the days ahead.” He further said the situation indicates that AL is preparing for another election without BNP. Cases are being filed one after another against our leaders, trial also has started against some leaders. Doing this things they are preparing for another one sided election. But as much as elections are held without country’s main political force that will not be able to resolve the crisis, he added. On Monday, a letter signed by Syed Ashraful Islam was sent to 73 organisational districts. The letters addressed to upazilas, wards and union parishads were sent through district committees. Many district leaders reportedly have received the letters. Initiates are being taken in furtherance of the letter, said presidents and general secretaries of some districts. The letter reads: “A meeting of Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC) and Awami League Advisory Council (ALAC) presided over by party’s president Sheikh Hasina decided to recruit new members, renew old membership and hold councils from grass-roots to district level immediately. Ten teams were formed comprising the members of advisory council, presidium and central working committee to supervise the holding of conferences, councils and organisational activities at level properly.” Syed Ashraf, in his latter, also said there is no alternative to enhance the organisational strength of the party to face the challenge of the coming days. Leaders of several organisational districts said the letter urged the party’s ranks and files to be united to resist any kind of atrocity and violence of BNP and Jamaat-Shibir. Meanwhile, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia went to Nilphamari on Thursday to collect public support for her party. Momtazul Islam, Awami League general secretary of Nilphamari, admitted to have received the letter sent by Syed Ashraful Islam. He sent the letter to presidents of the district, upazila, ward and union parishad units for holding conference as soon as possible. “The letters received by us will be sent to all concerned. Besides, a letter from the district is going to be sent to them,” he said. The BNP-led 20 party alliance is optimistic about midterm polls. Leaders of the party think the government will be bound to hold midterm election next year. Before January 5 polls, ruling Awami League told UN Assistant Secretary-General Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, BNP and other people at home and abroad concerned that the election was going to be held for continuance of the constitutional provision. After the election, AL started to say that it is set to rule the country for 5 years. The ruling party further said election will not be held before 2019. One year anniversary of AL government will be held in January next year. BNP-Jamaat alliance is determined to wage such a tough movement that the government will give in to their pressure for midterm polls. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia asked the allies to take preparation to this effect. Political observers think AL has moved to revamp the party’s all bodies and grass-roots units to thwart BNP-Jamaat movement. The ruling party also asked its partners to boost their strength. As part of this, Jatiya Party started to work. JP held biennial conference in Khagrachhari. Conference of Sramik party and Olema party is slated for tomorrow (Sunday) and Tuesday. Meanwhile, JP will organise Eid reunion on October 30. On the other hand, biennial conference will be held in Chuadanga on November 5, rally in Chittagong on November 12 and biennial conference in Moulvibazar on November 16. Asked about midterm polls, caretaker government adviser and political analyst MM Shawkat Ali said the government is under pressure from home and abroad to hold a midterm poll. The EU and the USA are insisting on the government in this regard. The government is under pressure for not having a strong opposition. The Awami League claimed that it has taken initiative by issuing letters for reorganising the party which is routine activities of the party. But these are not done to resist opposition’s movement. When asked, AL Presidium Member, Nuh-ul-Alam Lelin, told this correspondent, “There is no relation with District and upazila conferences of Awami League with BNP’s movement. Councils and conferences are the routine work of the party. In every three years central council of AL is completed. We want to complete conference of all units before central council.” Ten teams were formed at a joint meeting of AL Central Working Sangsad and Advisory Parishad in a bid to complete conferences and councils of the party across the country at Ganabhaban in the city in September last. Besides seven teams in seven divisions of the country, two teams for Dhaka division and one team for Chittagong division was formed additionally. The meeting also directed for completing councils of different districts and upazilas under the leadership of those teams by December next. Thakugaon district council was held in October 16 last and Rajshahi metropolis conference will be held today. Besides, eight district councils of Rajshahi division will be completed by December 10 this year. A central leader of AL, not to be named, told this correspondent, “November to January is the season for political activities. BNP and Jamaat alliance may create political turmoil in the name of movement. So the AL is taking advance preparation for strengthening the organization.” An intelligent agency of government has submitted a report to Home Ministry expressing concern that BNP and Jamaat may create political unrest. The report also mentioned that the BNP-Jamaat alliance is trying to create political turmoil. On the basis of the intelligent agency’s warning, the Home Ministry directed police administration, information ministry, rail division and different intelligent agencies for necessary step to prevent any destruction which may people’s life. The intelligent agency report revealed that BNP-Jamaat alliance is trying to create political unrest and different types of destructive activities to put the government in trouble. In view of that BNP, the main party of the alliance, is reorganizing associate organizations and new committees are forming of different associate organizations. The report also said that war crime trial will be the main issue of anti-government movement. Activists of Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir will be in the street on the issue. They will create anarchy against party leaders centering verdict of war crime tribunal. Verdict of several leaders of Jamaat is remained waiting. The BNP-Jamaat activities will target country’s RMG sector again. For this reason they are reorganizing their committees of different levels. Ministry sources said that the Home Ministry advised IGP, information, secretary of rail division, DGFI, Director General of NSI, AIGP, DG of RAB for taking necessary measure.
