Abbas in grave crisis after taking charge of city BNP:Daily Sun

It has been possible to prove arch rival Sadek Hossain Khoka as failure and remove him. It has also been possible to capture the post of city BNP. As a result party standing committee member Mirza Abbas was in a very jolly mood. But this new assignment has become a big burden for him now and a major embarrassment as well. The situation is such that his night sleep has disappeared under manifold p
ressure from government and own party. Along with falling from the grace of chairperson Khaleda Zia his position is becoming vulnerable gradually to the party activists and supporters. It is said that he is in great trouble ahead of the proposed movement and struggle of the party. Abbas has reportedly told people close to him that he can not sleep at night because on the one side the entire responsibility of anti-government movement is on his head. On the other hand there is the fear of earning the wrath of the government. Various discussions are going on in and outside of the party over this. Chairperson rebukes him for a small mistake. He received tough rebuff on September 22 for taking stand against hartal mistakenly. Later, understanding the situation Mirza Abbas agreed to call hartal. In the latest instance, in the BNP standing committee meeting on Thursday Khaleda Zia brought direct charge of inaction in movement against Mirza Abbas. Pointing at him the chairperson wanted to know what responsibilities he has discharged after taking the charge of the city. She also asked him to explain why the city committee did not make any strong protest after permission for rally at Suhrawardy Udyan was refused. One of the leaders present at the meeting told this correspondent on condition of anonymity, when Mirza Abbas tried to explain that ‘government is opening fire, making arrests’, the chairperson forced him to stop by rebuking him. This leader said that he never saw Khaleda Zia so agitated or expressing so much anger against Abbas. Meanwhile, there is no good news from party’s senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman now living in London. In telephonic conversation with a leader Tarique has expressed doubt about movement in Dhaka under the leadership of Abbas. The leader claimed that Tarique also expressed suspicion whether he has any secret relation with the government. Sadek Hossain Khoka who is staying in the USA for receiving medical treatment has reportedly developed his relation with Tarique Rahman. He will shortly go to London to meet Tarique there. When contacted over phone, Khoka said he needs to go to another country in order to get entry visa after expiry of six months. He has chosen the UK for the purpose. As his son is studying in the UK, he should go there to meet him. About various aspect of anti-government movement, he cast away his grief for losing Dhaka city unit leadership. Mirza Abbas replaced him as Dhaka city unit BNP convener. Khoka said he will be happy with any success of Abbas in dealing with the post. Khoka further said it is easy to say but difficult to do. Many people can make sweeping comment from the outside. An opportunity is created to test somebody’s ability if he shoulders upon a responsibility. The reality is clear to all. Replying to a query as to whether movement under the leadership of Abbas will be successful, BNP’s standing committeee member Tariqul Islam refused to make any comment. He said he is sick and staying in his village home. Party’s standing committee member Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah said Mirza Abbas and Goeswar Chandra Roy were very critical of Khoka. Now they have worn the game boot. Let us see how much goal they can score. He, however, is optimistic about some better movement now. BNP chairperson’s adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo has thrown a question saying “If Abbas fails, who is left to replace him and play the role. Abbas is bound to succeed in the question of movement.” Abul Khayer Bhuiyan, a person close to Abbas, said after taking over responsibility any person remains in stress. Abbas has been entrusted with discharging overwhelming responsibilities. Outcome of any movement does not depend on any particular person. It depends on policy. So, Khoka or Abbas should not be held responsibility for any failure. Abbas and his loyalists established supremacy in the party saying that Khoka is inactive and failed in party activities. Through this move they created perception in public mind that BNP’s movement will be successful if Abbas gets responsibility of City BNP instead of Khoka. Abbas group also said that Khoka has a good term with the ruling party. Sources said, in such a way Mirza Abbas has captured the position of City BNP through grouping and lobbying. Though in the first stage Abbas did not agree but his close associates in the party like Goeswar Chandra Roy, Barkatullah Bulu, Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury, Salauddin Ahmed of Demra, Syed Mozzammel Hossian Alal and Abul Khaer Bhuiyan extended moral support to Mirza Abbas. They convinced Abbas that it is necessary to take control of City BNP from the hand of Khoka. Otherwise we will not be able to establish our supremacy to the central politics. Sources said, after announcing Dhaka City Committee of BNP in 2011 under the leadership of Khoka, since then loyalists of Mirza Abbas kept vigilance to Khoka-led city committee. After an intensive grouping and lobbying, they became successful on July 18 last. Facing a massive pressure, party chief Khaleda Zia made Mirza Abbas convener of City committee on July 18 last. Requesting anonymity, several leaders of the party said, Khaleda Zia reconstituted BNP city unit prioritizing loyalists of Mirza Abbas due to various initiatives which created an expectation for future movement among BNP. Now Dhaka-based movement of BNP fully depends on Mirza Abbas. But it is very tough which Mirza Abbas observes for the last three and half months. A source said that Mirza Abbas did not attend Gulshan party office fearing chairperson. Sources said in the beginning Mirza Abbas became angry for not getting a like-minded member secretary to the city unit. When Habib-un-Nabi Sohel, a leader of Sechchasebak Dal was appointed secretary in city unit of BNP, supporters of Mirza Abbas locked his room under key. Party Chairperson Khaleda Zia did not accept it. Mirza Abbas at last accepted the appointment made by party chairperson. A question has been raised about BNP’s silence over the agitation of post deprived activist of JCD after its council on October 14 last. At one stage, Khaleda Zia herself instructed Mirza Abbas to make a solution of it. Though Dhaka city BNP was not given permission to hold a public meeting in the capital on November 8, he remained silent. Now question has been raised on it in the party. Mirza Abbas is now talking about non-violent movement in every meeting so that it is proved that the politics of Khoka was not appropriate. Because ahead of January 5 election at a public meeting, Khoka urged the leaders and activists to take to street with sharp weapons in tackling the government. There was allegation of Abbas supporters that Khoka gave this speech to serve a special purpose. And following this, the government then arrested many persons in preventing violence. Now discussion is going on in the party that to what extent it would be possible to weaken the government. Though three months have elapsed, full fledged committees have not been formed at thanas, wards and unions of the City BNP. It is a tough task to form 1800 committees at thana, ward and union level. Though leaders concerned claimed that some 60 to 70 percent committees have been formed. Leaders opine differently as to when this process would be completed. According to central social welfare secretary Abul Khayer Bhuiyan, it will take two to three years to form full fledged committee. On the other hand the number one joint convenor of the committee and BNP Chairperson’s adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo said, the committee has to be formed by December 5 at any cost in order to make the movement successful. In order to strengthen the Dhaka Mahanagar BNP one workers meeting for every three thanas is being planned to be held, said the sources. Mahanagar leaders are planning to invite Khaleda Zia as chief guest to those meetings. But no one is certain that the chairperson will attend those meetings. It was found that the leaders are more concerned about the success of the movement rather than forming the committee. Because if the movement fails Mirza Abbas will not have any way to get away by bringing allegation against Sadeque Hossain Khoka. He will have to take the responsibility this time. A leader who is close to Abbas said that the leaders were invigorated in the beginning to declaration of Mahanagar committee but now they are disconsolate.
