ore the court to prove that you have not embezzled the funds of orphans,” she said. The PM made the remarks while delivering her introductory speech at the Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC) meeting at her official residence Ganabhaban in the city on Friday night. Sheikh Hasina, also the president of AL, said that she had forcibly returned home and faced allegations though the caretaker government (2007-2008) tried to refrain her from returning home. Pointing at BNP leaders, she alleged that those who have connections with corruption, militancy, terrorism and embezzled money of orphans are engaged in tall-talks. The premier also criticized those who are still delivering the theory of caretaker government saying that they have sunken with the theory of caretaker government. Sheikh Hasina said that the then BNP led government (2001-2006) and caretaker government has filed a total of 16 cases against her but failed to find-out any prove of corruption against her. “Even, the World Bank also tried to make Awami League controversial by bringing allegation of corruption in Padma Bridge construction but it failed to prove it,” she added. The premier said that it is BNP which tarnished the image of Bangladesh in international arena by engaging in corruption and money-laundering and sheltering militancy. “They are involved in corruption, militancy and burning holly Quran but do politics in the name of religion. They tried to mislead people,” she said. Sheikh Hasina said that Awami League will continue the advance-forward of the country through facing any situation. “We will complete our ongoing unfinished works to make Bangladesh a mid-income country before 2021. We will make Bangladesh a developed country by 2041,” she said. The premier said that many south-east Asian countries and developed countries failed to achieve development that Bangladesh achieved in the last five years. About achievements of Bangladesh in the recent past SAARC summit, she said that all the participant countries in the summit admitted that Bangladesh is advancing forward. Sheikh Hasina recalled the contribution of Nepal to the country’s liberation war in 1971 and thanked the Nepalese government for organizing the SAARC summit successfully. In the meeting, the AL took elaborate programmes for observing Hussein Shaheed Suhrawardy’s death anniversary on Dec 5, martyred intellectual day on Dec 14, victory day on Dec 16 and Bangabandhu’s homecoming day on January 10. Sheikh Hasina in a closed-door meeting after her introductory speech asked the high command to evaluate ‘inactive but dedicated’ party leaders at council sessions. In the meeting, Mirza Azam said brick-field owners are facing problems as coal exports by India remain halted. Coal crisis deepens further because coal production goes awry in Barapukuria for the last couple of days, he added. Hasina said she could have talked to the Indian authorities on this issue during her Nepal tour if she was informed earlier of the matter. Meeting sources said AL has also made a decision to observe Victory Day programmes even at union levels. It also decided to hold discussions on December 16 and organise a rally on January 10 to observe Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day. Nasim proposed to take a month-long programme to observe Victory Day. But the PM did not support it. AL leader Subash Bose raised a question about the activities of Workers Party in Narail, but Syed Ashraful asked him not to criticise any partner of the 14-party alliance. He suggested party leaders to maintain good terms with the allies. AL leaders Syed Ashraful Islam, Kazi Jafarullah, Obaidul Quader, Matia Chowdhury, Shahara Khatun, Nuh-ul-Alam-Lenin, Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, Nurul Islam Nahid, Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Dipu Moni, Sujit Roy Nandi, Aminul Islam, among others, were present. UNB adds: Hitting out at those who often come up with their various theories and advice about Bangladesh future, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government understands only one theory — ensuring the basic rights of people. “Many people are saying many things that Bangladesh has this potential and that potential, but the Awami League government understands only one theory and that’s ensuring the basic rights of people,” she said. “We understand only one theory - we’ll have to provide food to people so that they can have their everyday meals, we have to provide homes for the homeless people, we have to provide healthcare facility, we have to ensure a better life for all, that’s it. We’ll move forward with this simple theory and want to implement that,” she said. She reaffirmed her commitment to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income country before 2021 and a developed one within 2041. Taking a further dig at the theorists, the Prime Minister recalled the fate of the last caretaker government which had strictly followed the theories of those people. “That caretaker government sank following their theories…the AL government doesn’t want to go down following those theories,” Hasina said without mentioning the names of the theorists. The AL chief said her government wants to cut down the poverty to 10 percent during her current tenure.
