Move for clearing cases against BNP leaders:Daily Sun

The ruling Awami League-led government is going to make a move for quick disposal of cases filed against BNP senior leaders for their alleged involvement in violence centring the January 5 general election. Alongside quick disposal of the cases, sources said, the government may arrest the accused to gain absolute control over the field of politics. BNP has been planning to start another round of
movement ahead of next January 5—the red-letter day for AL as it won the polls and formed government for the second consecutive term. However, the elections took place amid violence and low turnout of voters—some 40 per cent voters cast votes braving all obstacles. The BNP-led alliance boycotted the election and declared to thwart it. AL insiders said the government has information that BNP and its closest ally Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami may take to the streets, marking the day. To counter BNP, they say, the government has directed the administration to stay alert so that the BNP-Jamaat combine cannot resort to violence and create panic among people. Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, also AL advisory council member, warned the rivals of dire consequences in case of creating mayhem in the name of movement. “If they [BNP-Jamaat] try to create unrest in the name of movement, the government will handle them with an iron fist,” he cautioned. The government may ask the police department to re-investigate previous cases filed against BNP men. The cases are now shelved for unknown reasons. Amid political tactics to face BNP-Jamaat, the government is yet to finalise a programme to celebrate its first anniversary of office. The insiders say AL is yet to chalk up any anniversary plan but it would stage a huge showdown at historic Suhrawardy Udyan on January 10, marking the homecoming day of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The government may parade its first year’s success stories through the programme. It will step into its second year in office on January 12. Party insiders said Awami League Central Working Committee would finalise the programme at a meeting to be held at the end of December. The government has rather concentrated hard to fix its course of action on BNP’s plan of movement marking January 5 to press for midterm polls under a caretaker administration. As the government does not want the BNP-Jamaat’s success on streets, it plans to face them with an iron fist. Sources said police may go for wholesale arrests so that BNP-Jamaat’s central leaders and grass-roots so that they cannot mobilise people for movement. Administration aside, AL leaders and activists are taking preparations to remain in the field. The expired district committees of the ruling party are being reorganised through council sessions to this end. It also decided to increase organisational activities in the areas where BNP and Jamaat are strong.
