No significant progress in Ramna Batamul blast case:Daily Sun

No significant progress has been made in the trial process of the much-talked-about Ramna Batamul blast case although thirteen and a half years elapsed after the incident. The deadliest blast occurred during Bangla New Year celebration on April 14, 2001 that claimed 10 lives and injured many others. The blast took place during the traditional celebrations of Bangla New Year 1408 organised by Chha
yanat at Ramna Batamul in city. Sergeant Amal Chanda of Babupura police outpost filed two cases—one for the killings and the other for explosions—with Ramna police station. On June 23 this year, Dhaka Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Ruhul Amin gave death sentence to eight persons, including Huji chief Mufti Hannan, and life imprisonment to six others in the killing case, but trial of the case filed under explosive substances act is yet to be completed. Trial of the case is pending at Dhaka speedy Trial Tribunal-1. The court has so far recorded depositions of only seven out of 84 prosecution witnesses (PWs) in the case. There have been allegations that the prosecution is not sincere enough to complete trial of the case and witnesses are not summoned for appearing before court to give depositions, resulting in the delay. The prosecution lawyers, however, claimed that they are busy in other cases resulting in delay in the trial. Abdullah Abu, special public prosecutor of the tribunal said, “We are busy in August 21 grenade attack cases resulting in delay in trial of Ramna blast case.” “As we are busy in grenade attack cases, we are not getting time for issuance of summons to witnesses to appear before court to give depositions,” the prosecutor said. According to case details, it took over seven years for investigators to find out Huji links with the incident. After six enquirers, CID inspector Abu Hena Md Yusuf was appointed the investigation officer of the case. He pressed charges against 14 militants including Mufti Hannan on November 30, 2008. The charge-sheeted accused are Huji chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Moulana Yahiya, Mufti Abdul Hye, Moulana Shawkat Osman alias Sheikh Farid, Moulana Abu Bakar alias Selim Hawlader, Moulana Mohammad Tajuddin, Moulana Abdul Hannan Sabbir, Arif Hasan Sumon, Moulana Akbar Hossain alias Helaluddin, Moulana Abu Taher, Moulana Abdur Rouf, Hafez Jahangir Alam Badar and Shahadat Ullah alias Jewel. Of them, Hannan, Suman, Jewel, Abu Taher, Rouf and Akbar are behind bars while others are still at large. During investigation, Mufti Hannan and Akbar confessed to their guilt before the magistrate under Section 164 of CrPC. The accused admitted to have carried out the attack on Bangla New Year’s day, because they believed such functions are anti-Islamic. Another accused, Arif also made confessional statement before the magistrate. Defence counsel Faruque Ahmed told daily sun: “The prosecution is busy in August 21 grenade attack cases resulting in delay in the trial.” “We also want quick disposal of the case,” he said.
