Tofail urges India to ratify border agreement:Daily Sun

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Friday urged the Indian government to ratify the already signed Bangladesh-India Border Agreement in Indian parliament. Stressing the need for removing the tariff, non-tariff and para-tariff barriers for narrowing the trade deficit between the two countries, Tofail said like many other markets around the world, Bangladeshi products are popular in the Indian marke
t, so more opportunities need to be created for Bangladeshi products in the Indian market. The commerce minister made the remarks while addressing as chief guest the inaugural function of the India International Mega Trade Fair-2014 in Kolkata. “The communication systems need to be improved first to enhance the trade, initiatives have been taken to establish an economic corridor among China, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bangladesh.” Tofail said. He hoped that revolutionary changes will take place in this region once the economic corridor opens. Mentioning that though Bangladeshi viewers watch Indian TV channels, Indian audience doesn’t have access to Bangladeshi TV channels, Tofail urged the Indian government to take steps in this regard. Inviting the Indian investors to Bangladesh, Tofail told the function that Bangladesh is now maintaining an excellent investment-friendly environment with the government offering attractive facilities for the foreign investors. “There are 16 crore consumers in Bangladesh, we have skilled and easily-available manpower. The political situation is stable in Bangladesh along with an excellent investment climate. In such an environment, more Indian investors may come forward to invest here,” Tofail said. He also observed that the India International Mega Trade Fair will play an important role in establishing closer communication between the businessmen of Bangladesh and India, and also will ease the way for joint-venture investments. Tofail mentioned that ‘Boarder Hats’ have been set up in a bid to enhance bilateral trade between Bangladesh and India, adding that steps have been taken both in the public and private sectors to remove the trade barriers between the two neighbouring countries. “Steps need to be taken to ease the visa process, raising awareness among the importers and exporters of the two countries, and to create opportunities of exchanging views among the businessmen of the two nations” he said. Tofail Ahmed left Dhaka for Kolkata Thursday to attend the inaugural ceremony of the 10-day mega fair as the chief guest. The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry is organising the trade fair. Like every year, Bangladesh’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) will participate in the fair aimed at narrowing the bilateral trade deficit between Bangladesh and India. A total of 97 firms are taking part in the IIMTF this year. The Bangladeshi participants will showcase various products like handicrafts, apparel items, leather goods, ceramics, jute goods, agro foods and Jamdani saree at the fair. Some 82 Bangladeshi companies took part in the fair last year and obtained export orders worth $447,500.
