Tofail for quality governance in corporate sector:Daily Sun

 Today’s businesses are subject to new and greater pressures and external factors, including regulatory changes with one of the biggest challenges coming from globalisation, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said on Friday. Mentioning that ethical business is not merely a necessity, he said once an organisation becomes corrupt, its level of legitimacy declines and the call for more regulations gets l
ouder. The minister was addressing the inaugural session of the 5th ICSB national Convention at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) at Agargaon in the capital. Tofail said with the ever-growing competition in the market, ethics has been they key driver in creating, defending and enhancing reputation and confidence of a brand through transparency. “Ethical governance presents us with a great opportunity to differentiate from the competition in the market to add value, a company which is known to be secure and run on ethical principles will be more trusted by customers, shareholders and investors, and it will be more successful than those less ethical companies,” the minister added. He said Bangladesh being one of the fastest growing economies of the world, has witnessed spectacular growth over the last few years, the reform process initiated early in 1990s leading Bangladesh towards a more competitive economy continued allowing it to make its footprints on global horizon as an emerging economic nation. “These achievements have also created new challenges, particularly in terms of narrowing the gap between the privileged and poor,” he added. The commerce minister also said the government has initiated a number of newer enactments to build up the management of the corporate sector to promote the good governance. “This is, of course, in line with the ultimate aim of the government to develop the corporate sector thorough quality management with the help of professionally educated, thoroughly trained and well practiced company secretaries,” he added. Mohammad Asad Ullah, FCS, President of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries, Bangladesh, (ICSB) presided over the opening ceremony of the 5th ICSB national Convention. While addressing the function, Asad Ullah underscored the importance of qualified company secretaries and their professional know-how for establishing good corporate governance. He also urged the government to extend support to develop quality of education, education materials and premises for the institute and also sought financial assistance from the government to build the ICSB Bhaban in the city. The convention was attended by a large number of members, corporate professionals, foreign delegates and dignitaries from home. Three separate sessions styled “Ethical Leadership promotes Governing Excellence”, “Leading Effective Board-Ensure Governance”, “The Changing Role of Company Secretaries from Compliance to Governance” were held during the daylong conference which were participated by eminent economists like Dr. AB Mirza Azizul Islam, former Finance Adviser to the Caretaker Government, Faruk Ahmed Siddiqui, former Chairman of BSEC, Suhel Ahmed Chowdhury, former Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Professor Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddiq, Vice Chancellor of the Dhaka University. Advocate Anisul haque, Minister for Law Justice and Parliamentary Affairs attended the concluding session of the conference.
