BAU plunges into deep crisis Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) has plunged in severe crisis due to alleged moral degradation and widespread corruption of its vice-chancellor:Daily Sun

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) has plunged in severe crisis due to alleged moral degradation and widespread corruption of its vice-chancellor Prof Rafiqul Hoque.  Teachers of the university, who are alleging that Hoque had tarnished the image of the renowned institution, have been waging movement against the VC since March 17. In the meantime, the Democratic Teachers Forum, a platform of
pro-government academia, has expelled Hoque from their association for life-time on the grounds of his moral degradation as they got sufficient proof of the alleged corruptions committed by the BAU VC. Majority of the teachers, who are demanding resignation of Hoque, on March 29, issued a 24-hours ultimatum to the VC to step down. As the VC had not resigned, they declared fresh programme and scheduled to hold a human chain on the campus today (Tuesday). The agitating teachers are also scheduled to meet Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Prof AK Azad Chowdhury today. Both the Democratic Teachers Forum and BAU Teachers Association have come to the streets demanding removal of the controversial VC. “We no longer want to see him in the top position of the administration as he has lost moral courage to hold the prestigious post. He is also involved in widespread corruption and took financial benefit through giving mass-appointment,” Prof AKM Shamsuddin, president of DTF, said. He told daily sun that they are scheduled to meet the education minister and UGC chairman today to inform them about the misdeeds and corruption committed by the VC. “If the top level of the government remains reluctant to take steps against Hoque, we will go for further movement,” the DIF president said. Prof Paresh Chandra Modak, dean of the faculty of Agriculture Economics and Rural Society at BAU, told daily sun that Hoque has spent only 30 percent of the allocated budget in development works and misappropriated the rest 70 percent showing various excuses. “The VC appointed hundreds of teachers and staffs at the university in last three and a half years. Those who got appointed are either beautiful ladies or had bribed Hoque,” he said. Paresh also alleged that the chain of command at the administration of the varsity has already collapsed as the VC operates the administration with his loyal officials. Sources at the BAU informed that the VC had appointed 302 persons in various posts through taking bribe in February this year. He also gave a mass-appointment to about 250 persons in 2013 in the same way. There are widespread allegations that the VC and his cohorts appointed each of the candidates through taking bribe of Tk 5 lakh to 10 lakh. Sources said many Jamaat-Shibir backed candidates have also been appointed by Hoque. Subrata Kumar, an assistant professor of agriculture extension education department, said the teachers at this department were boycotting classes and exams as the VC appointed a teacher at their department who was not a student of this discipline. “We will continue movement until the issue is settled,” Subrata said. Teachers of the Agriculture Economics department alleged that there was a development budget of Tk 17 lakh for their department, but the contractor had not spent Tk 3 lakh of the allocated budget. The BAU authorities led by the VC allegedly appointed some employees at some departments without taking consent of concerned department heads. But, the controversial activities of the VC came in fore on March 17 after a leak of some audio clips containing his unethical conversation with a woman. After the leak of the audio, teachers started to hold a series human chains and press conferences on the campus. They are also scheduled to hold human chain today demanding removal of the controversial vice-chancellor.  Meanwhile, copies of the two leaked audio clips have already been sent to the education minister.  The UGC is also carrying out an investigation into the alleged corruption by the VC. Leaders of the Democratic Teachers Forum (DTF) at the BAU may also submit some documents to the minister today as the proof of controversial activities done by Prof Rafiqul Hoque. Contacted, VC Rafiqul Hoque, however, claimed himself innocent. “I am very sick. They have intentionally used a female employee against me to remove me from the post,” he alleged. Asked whether it was his voice on the leaked audio clips, Hoque said, “I have to talk to lots of people.”
