With the painful memory of the grisly killing of writer-blogger Avijit Roy still fresh in public minds, another young blogger and online activist was hacked to death in broad daylight in the capital on Monday allegedly by three madrasa students. The victim Oyasiqur Rahman Babu, 27, son of Tipu Sultan of Hazipur village under Ramganj in Laxmipur district, was a trainer at a travel agency named Far
East Aviation in Motijheel area. He was living along with his father at a rented house in Tejgaon industrial area in the city. The incident took place at Dipikar More area of Tejgaon industrial area at around 10:00 am when Oyasiqur Rahman Babu was going to his office. The assailants attacked him suddenly with a sharp machete and injured him severely. He fell down on the road and the miscreants started running away. At that time two of the assailants, Zikrullah and Ariful Islam, were caught by the local people while one managed to flee the spot. The culprits who were caught, later confessed to planning and attacking the online activist. They also claimed that Babu was killed for the discord created over his writing on religious affairs. Humayun Kabir, Sub-Inspector of Tejgaon Shilpanchal Police Station said,  “On information from locals, I rushed to the spot, rescued blood-stained Babu and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the doctors declared him dead at around 10:30am.” “Babu’s face and neck bore several stab injury marks which caused huge bleeding leading to his death. I got the victim’s identity from his national identity card found in his pocket,” said the SI. Police arrested Zikrullah and Ariful Islam, students of Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong and Darul Ulum Madrasa at Mohammadpur in the capital, for their alleged involvement in the murder, said Saluddin, officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Shilpanchal police station. In a press briefing, Biplob Kumar Sarkar, deputy commissioner of DMP (Tejgaon Division), said “Three killers took part in the killing mission. Locals caught two of them red-handed with two machetes while they were fleeing after the grisly killing. Later, locals handed them over to police. Another attacker named Taher managed to flee away.” He also claimed that during preliminary interrogation, the arrested duo said “They killed Babu at the directives of their Hujur who told them that Oyasiqur was an anti-Islamic blogger.” At DMCH, Oyasiqur’s cousin Helal told the journalists that “Oyasiqur had completed his master’s degree from Tejgaon College two years ago. Later, he was working at a travel agency at Motijheel area.” While asked about Oyasiqur’s blogging on internet, he said “I don’t know whether he used to write or not.” On February 26, Avijit Roy a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin, was hacked to death and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonna was seriously injured in an attack by unidentified assailants near the TSC at Dhaka University after the couple came out of the Ekushey Boi Mela. In the same way, Ahmed Razib Haider, blogger and one of the organisers of Gonojgaran Manch, was hacked to death in front of his residence at Mirpur area on February 15, 2013. It may be pointed out that Islamist militants were allegedly responsible for the killing of at least 16 people, including three bloggers and progressive teachers, in the last one decade. But punishment was awarded to none of the killers.
