At least eight people, including the bank manager, were killed and 20 others injured in a broad daylight bank robbery attempt at a branch of Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited (BCBL) at Ashulia in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital on Tuesday. The deceased were identified as bank manager Wali Ullah, 45, the bank’s client Palash, security guard Badrul Islam, 38, owner of a nearby workshop Zillur
Rahman, 40, shopkeeper Monir Hossain, 55, businessmen Jamir Ali, 26, and Nur Mohammad, 45. Locals caught two of the robbers – Raju and Mamun – and beat one of them dead. The identity of the robber, who was beaten to death by the angry mob, could not be known immediately. The robbery took place at the BCBL branch located on the first floor of the three-storey Nazimuddin Market in Ashulia. “The amount of money looted from the bank could not be known immediately as the bank manger was killed in the incident,” police said. Witnesses said a group of 12-15 people came to the ground floor of the bank in four motorcycles. Later, they entered the bank separately in the guise of clients at around 2:00pm. After all the robbers had entered the bank; and before the people inside realised what was happening, the armed gang held all the bank officials and customers hostage at gunpoint and asked the manger for the key of the vault. As the bank manager denied giving them the vault key, the robbers shot the manager and a security guard. The robbers also beaten up and stabbed bank officials indiscriminately, leaving 20 people injured. Sensing presence of the robbers inside the bank, several shop owners on the ground floor of the market went to the first floor and tried to enter the bank. At the same time, locals from a nearby mosque made an announcement through the loudspeaker about the ongoing robbery attempt. Hearing the announcement, several thousand locals rushed to the bank with sticks and tried to lay siege to the building to capture the robbers. Hearing the alert from the local mosque, the robbers tried to flee the area by firing several rounds of shots and blasting cocktails. Three people received bullets at that time. Chasing them, locals managed to catch two robbers and beat them up severely. One of them died there. When police went to recover the other members of the dacoits group from the locals, they locked into clash with the locals. The angry mob vandalised two police vehicles. Later, more police personnel arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control and rescued one member of the robbers to take him to Enam Medical College and Hospital. Police recovered five high-power bombs, Tk 5.94 lakh and a motorcycle from outside the bank. The injured were rushed to the Enam Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared the bank manager, shopkeeper Monir, bank client Palash, security guard Badrul and workshop owner Zillur dead. Later, two more injured succumbed to injuries at Enam Medical College Hospital. The bodies have been kept at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, said manager of the hospital Yousuf Ali. SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman, DIG of Dhaka Range, informed that several teams of police were conducting drives soon after the incident to nab the criminals and some people were held so far.
