About the attack on Khaleda Zia, the Election Commissioner said it was deplorable and a criminal offence but the EC has nothing to do in this regard. It is the duty of the police to take action against the offenders. EC secretary Md Sirajul Islam told this correspondent last night “The process to send the directive in this regard to the police and the magistrates well within Friday night is in progress. There is no restriction on the BNP chairperson to participate in the election campaign if she abides by the code of conduct. But the way she is conducting the campaign is not in accordance with law.” Earlier, on Thursday afternoon, a delegation of the Awami League -backed “Thousands Citizens’ Committee” called on CEC Kazi Rakib Uddin Ahmed and demanded action against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for violation of the electoral code of conduct.
