Ban on Khaleda’s election campaign:Daily Sun

The Election Commission (EC) has prohibited BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s campaign in the city corporation elections considering it a violation of the electoral code of conduct. The commission has also asked the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner and the magistrates entrusted with the election duty to stop such campaign. The EC approved the directive regarding this on Friday. EC sources disclo
sed it after preparing a file in this respect yesterday morning. The deputy secretary at EC Shamsul Alam went to the residences of the Election Commissioners for their approval and secured their signatures. Election Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mobarak signed the file at around 6:30pm on Friday and the process was going on to secure the CEC’s signature and send the directive to those concerned, within Friday night. Abdul Mobarak told this correspondent that Khaleda Zia was also being informed of the decision. Election Commissioner Abdul Hafiz told this correspondent Friday evening that the way Khaleda Zia was conducting the election campaign with motorcades was a clear violation of the electoral code of conduct. Due to this reason, the commission has taken the decision to stop such campaigning. About the attack on Khaleda Zia, the Election Commissioner said it was deplorable and a criminal offence but the EC has nothing to do in this regard. It is the duty of the police to take action against the offenders. EC secretary Md Sirajul Islam told this correspondent last night “The process to send the directive in this regard to the police and the magistrates well within Friday night is in progress. There is no restriction on the BNP chairperson to participate in the election campaign if she abides by the code of conduct. But the way she is conducting the campaign is not in accordance with law.” Earlier, on Thursday afternoon, a delegation of the Awami League -backed “Thousands Citizens’ Committee” called on CEC Kazi Rakib Uddin Ahmed and demanded action against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for violation of the electoral code of conduct.
