BNP may remain dormant till November:Daily Sun

The BNP is not unhappy with its decision to boycott the city polls and the outcome. Rather, the leaders of the party think that they have politically gained through these elections and it has been proved that the people are with the BNP. However, some of them feel that the organisational weakness of the party has been exposed through these polls. Due to this reason, the party high-command is not r
eady to make any hurry to go for movement. There is very little possibility of a fresh tough anti-government movement by the BNP before November, sources in the BNP said.  BNP Standing Committee Member Lt. Gen. (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman said, “Although the polls have been boycotted, the BNP has not lost the elections. Rather, the BNP would have won had the elections been fair. So, the AL has suffered a moral defeat in these elections.”    Another BNP Standing Committee Member Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar said, “After the elections to the three city corporations it appeared to us that the decision of Khaleda Zia not to join the January 5 elections was correct. The ultimate opportunity to know the AL was available through these city elections.” Central Vice Chairman of the BNP Abdullah Al Noman said, “The BNP would have won the elections if those were fair. But the ruling party has forcibly declared itself the winner. What the BNP will do next will be decided by the time to come.” It has been learnt that there is little possibility for the BNP to resume the anti-government movement before November.  Before that any movement is not possible with the present structure of the party. Like Sadek Hossain Khoka, the present city convenor Mirza Abbas has also failed to reorganise the party. The party has to be recast to make it strong enough for launching a fresh movement. Meanwhile, despite a suggestion by a section of the party leaders to call hartal on Wednesday and Thursday in protest against ‘vote rigging,’ Khaleda Zia has not agreed. She wants to get the opinion of 20-party leaders and the pro-BNP intellectuals regarding any programme.
