The cabinet on Monday approved a revised agreement with a provision of boosting trade with a third country using the rail-road-water communications network of the close neighbour, India. Under the deal, Bangladesh will be able to transport goods to Nepal or Bhutan through India. Similarly, India will enjoy the same facility. The seal of approval was given during the weekly cabinet meeting at the s
ecretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Emerging from the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told reporters that the amended agreement is a great achievement for Bangladesh. “The amendment will help both the countries transport goods to a third country using road, water and railways of the territories concerned,” he said, adding that both sides would fix the charge for the passage of goods. Commerce ministry put forward the amendment agreement to the cabinet. Under the existing agreement, Bhuiyan said, both the countries can transport goods using the road, water and railways. Mentioning that two clauses have been added to the new deal, he said, “The agreement between Bangladesh and India was for three years, but from now on it will be for five years with an auto-renewal.” “If there’s a need for an amendment, both sides can fix it through a meeting,” the secretary said, adding that the new deal takes effect from April 1. The agreement was first signed between the two nations on March 28, 1972. It was signed afresh in 2009 but its tenure ended on March 31. The cabinet also gave the nod to a draft ‘The Ports (Amendment) Act 2015’. After the meeting, the premier joined videoconferencing with the offices of Barisal division, Netrakona and Patuakhali. She said the country has experienced a tough time centring the BNP-led 20-party alliance’s anarchy during its hartal-blockade programme. Hasina thanked law-enforcement agencies, public representatives and administrations for tackling mayhem and directed them to stay alert to avoid recurrence of such incidents. A division of the army would be constituted in the middle of Barisal, Patuakhali and Jhalakathi, she mentioned.
