BNP's polls boycott pre-planned: PM:Daily Sun

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said BNP boycotted the recently held city corporation polls as part of a deep-seated conspiracy only to put an international pressure on the government for its ouster. “She [Khaleda Zia] staged a drama by boycotting the polls to create international pressure to unseat the government. We didn’t do any wrong for which we have to bow down to international pressu
re. So, it is no use playing the game,” Hasina said while exchanging greetings with the mayor and councillor-elects of Chittagong City Corporation at Gonobhaban. BNP boycotted the April 28 polls in Dhaka and Chittagong on gross allegations of polling centre captures and vote rigging. Hasina, also president of the ruling Awami League, said BNP had an intention to put the polls in question. “BNP participated in the polls to overcome its 92 days’ political failure. Their participation in the polls was a mere drama.” “What happened on that day that BNP had to boycott the polls midway? BNP signally failed to prove their allegations of irregularities,” she added. The premier said BNP had an intention to stay off the polls after killing some people. “But their plan went awry as law-enforcing agencies were on alert.” She claimed BNP achieved nothing from its 92-day strike action. “She [Khaleda] returned home empty-handed. She took part in the polls to overcome her failure but boycotted the polls halfway as per plan.” Hasina looked askance at the BNP-Jamaat combine’s destructive activities in the name of movement and said how the BNP chief sought votes for ‘bus’ symbol after the killings of so many people in arson. She expressed the government’s firm determination to ensure exemplary punishment to the culprits who had hurled firebombs. “The miscreants, who burnt people to death, must face the music. It’s a popular demand to try those who killed so many innocents,” she said, adding that public safety would not be ensured if the culprits are not brought to book. AL leaders Mosharraf Hossain, Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Hasan Mahmud, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Faruk Kahn, AB Tajul Islam, Habibur Rahman Siraj and Asim Kumar Ukil, among others, were present.
