Salahuddin’s way back home too long:Daily Sun

The missing BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed’s return home from India, where he is now under arrest for illegal intrusion, appears to be a complicated matter. According to sources, his family members want him back home at the earliest, police are eager to get him arrested and the government is also willing to resolve the issue, but the ‘border’ stands as the biggest obstacle to all these. Bangladeshi c
itizen Salahuddin Ahmed will have to fight a legal battle as he has been arrested on the charge of illegal trespassing into India and this may take a long time. Beyond this, any rapid resolution of the issue is not possible without positive initiatives from the governments of the two countries. Not only about the return of Salahuddin from India, there is complication also over the availability of Indian visa for his wife Hasina Ahmed who wants to go to Meghalaya. State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told this correspondent, “India has not yet informed Bangladesh of anything in this regard. The initiative for bringing Salahuddin Ahmed back can be taken only after contacts are made between the two countries. In this respect, both the countries have to abide by the laws and rules. He is a fugitive accused in different cases. It is presumed that he was absconding in India. In this case, the government will bring him back home fast through legal process and put him to justice.” IGP Shahidul Huq said, “Salahuddin Ahmed is a fugitive accused and attempts are being made to arrest him. His location in India has been known through the media. If necessary, assistance of Interpol will be sought to arrest him.” Meanwhile, Shillong police said Salahuddin Ahmed was arrested as he had no valid travel documents with him. A case has also been filed against him for unlawful intrusion. This former state minister of Bangladesh was first taken to a mental hospital and shifted to the Shillong civil hospital. The legal procedure will be followed after his release from the hospital. There is a possibility of pushing him back afterwards. The Police and Intelligence officials of Bangladesh said the matter is not as easy as it appears to be. There is some uncertainty also. Several months will pass off for the disposal of the case through execution of possible jail-term or fines for his illegal intrusion. Only then it will be decided under which process he will be brought back to Bangladesh. And above all, as soon as he returns to Bangladesh as a fugitive accused, he will be arrested and sent to prison.
