Newborn stolen from DMCH rescued from Gazipur:Daily Sun

Finally, trauma of a mother, Runa Begum, ended on Thursday as she got back her newborn baby eight days after it was stolen from Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). “Today I feel like the happiest person in the world after getting back my baby. I am much happier today than the day I gave birth to the baby,” the cheerful Runa told a press briefing at Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) headquarters
in the capital. Runa and her husband Kawsar Hossain Babu were called at RAB headquarters after the rescue of the baby. The couple identified the rescued baby as theirs and also recognised the thief. RAB members in a drive rescued the baby boy from Board Bazar area of Gazipur district in the early hours of Thursday, ending the eight-day trauma of a mother. The crime busting force also arrested two women— Rasheda Khanom alias Parvin, 48, and Bely Akter alias Rahima, 45 — in connection with the stealing the baby. On August 21, Parvin, a professional midwife, came to DMCH reportedly to visit one of her relatives. Runa gave birth to twin baby boys the same day. Parvin managed to come closer with Runa and took one of her babies into her lap. At on stage, she took away the baby from the gynecology ward and fled the hospital, RAB’S legal and media wing director Mufti Mahbub Khan said at the briefing. Acting on secret information, RAB personnel conducted a raid on Parvin’s house in Borad Bazar area of Gazipur around 3:00am and arrested her, the Rab official said. Later, on the basis of her information, RAB raided Rahima’s house and found the baby there, he added. During preliminary interrogation, Parvin confessed to the RAB officials that she had the baby to Rahima in exchange for Tk 40,000 as she had no child, he added. “Parvin used to work as midwife at different clinics and earlier, she had stolen several newborn babies. She would steal newborns by declaring them dead to their parents,” the RAB official said quoting Rahima. “Six to seven months back, Parvin orally made a contract with Rahima to bring her a child. According to the deal, Parvin told Rahima to claim herself pregnant to her husband and act like that,” Mahbub quoted Rahima as saying. In reply to a query, Mahbub said, “We are yet to get any information as to whether anybody of DMCH is involved in the stealing the newborn baby of Runa.” At the press briefing, Runa’s husband Kawsar Hossaim thanked the government, media people and RAB members for their efforts and cooperation in rescuing their baby. “I will make one of my sons a journalist while other a RAB personnel as I have got my baby back thanks to their great efforts,” an overjoyed father told reporters. Meanwhile, DMCH Director Brig Gen Mustafizur Rahman at a press briefing thanked media for their cooperation in rescuing the newborn baby. “It would not be possible to get back the stolen baby unless the media published or broadcasts news on the incident,” he said. In reply to a query, he said “No employee of DMCH is involved in the incident. At least three babies have been stolen from DMCH since I joined here but no such allegation has been raised against any employee yet.” Stern action would be taken if any employee DMCH is found guilty of the offence, he added. He also said the DMCH authorities have taken decision not to keep any special midwife at gynecology ward. As per the decision, special midwives have already been ousted from the ward.
