Leaders of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Sunday threatened that they would shut down 245 units if the government has failed to ensure supply gas to those factories. They also blasted top officials of the ministry of power, energy and mineral resources for non-availability of gas over 16 hours a day. The leaders of BGMEA came down heavily on the top officia
ls of the ministry during a meeting held at Bidyut Bhaban on Sunday. Prime Ministers Power and Energy Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid, Energy and Mineral Resources Secretary Abubakar Siddique, Power Division Secretary Monowar Islam, Petrobangla Chairman Prof Hossain Monsur, Titas gas transmission and distribution company Managing Director Nowshad Islam, BGMEA President Md Atiqul Islam and senior official concerned attended the meeting. During the meeting, leaders of BGMEA also threatened to come to the street if they do not get any solution immediately. The energy and mineral resources division will hold an emergency meeting today at Petrocentre to find out a solution to the problem. BGMEA president Md Atiqul Islam in his written statement said a total of 245 garment units have been forced to suspend their operation for 15 to 16 hours a day due to shortage of gas supply at Chandora, East Chandora, Talipara, Salna, Safipur, Kasimpur, Konabari, Bhugra, Bhason, Malek Bari, Gazipur Chourasta and Gazipur Sadar. Its impossible to pay Eid-ul-Azha wage, bonus and overtime to the workers if the 245 garment units fail to continue their expected production and export due to shortage of gas supply, Md Atiqul Islam. It might create labour unrest ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, he feared. The BGMEA president said they have already informed the ministry on August 24 of the issue but did not get any solution to it. During the meeting, state minister, power and energy adviser and Petrobangla chairman faced criticism when Petrobangla chairman Prof Hossain Monsoor said they would not allot additional gas to the garment units, insiders said. The garments factories in Narayanganj and Chittagong are also facing severe gas crisis. At present, 81.13 percent of the countrys export earning comes from the garment sector and four crore people are directly and indirectly involved in the sector. The BGMEA president said the garment factories are facing severe gas crisis in Gazipur in the last seven days after four factories resume fertiliser production. He said the government could shut fertiliser factories to ensure gas to the countrys biggest export-oriented factories. Prime Ministers Power and Energy Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury told daily sun that garment owners have expressed their worries over shortage of gas supply in factories. He said they would meet Monday (today) to find out a solution in this regard. State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid said the crisis in garment factories intensified due to resumption of fertiliser production in four factories--KAFCO, CUFL, Ghorasal and Palash--at a time. I asked Petrobangla to take priority to supply gas
.but it does not heed my order, he said, expressing his dissatisfaction. If the fertiliser factories could shut one after another, then the disaster in garment factories would be avoided. He said the ministry would find out a solution immediately to ensure production at the export-oriented garment factories. He also hinted to shut fertiliser factories again as per of governments rationing programme in supplying gas to different consumers level. He said the ministry ordered to prepare upstream and downstream master plan as Petrobangla failed to do it during the last five years. Besides, the minister expressed its dissatisfaction over the activities of Petrobangla during a post review meeting with BGMEA leaders and said, I am not happy with the activities of energy and mineral resources division. Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Managing Director Nowshad Islam said the company has supplied around 800mmcfd gas to industrial units out of 2400mmcfd allotted for different consumers.
