Jatiya Party in deep crisis:Daily Sun

The leaders of Jatiya Party are locked in a fresh conflict over three issues which triggered a deep crisis in the party. Amid growing infighting among the party leaders, party chairman HM Ershad Wednesday relieved two presidium members Jatiya Party chief whip Tajul Islam and state minister for rural development and cooperatives Moshiur Rahman Ranga. Ershad has relieved them from the presidium ex
ercising his power according to Section 39 of the party constitution, said a press release signed by his press and political secretary Sunil Shuvo Roy on Wednesday. An internal conflict has erupted among the party men recently over three issues such as selection of the deputy leader of the opposition in parliament, quitting ministership by JP leaders and violating the order of HM Ershad, said a party insider. JP chairman HM Ershad and opposition leader of parliament Raushan Ershad have been at loggerheads over choosing the deputy leader of the opposition in parliament with the two recommending separate candidates for the post since last couple of months. Raushan Ershad on July 27 sent a letter to Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to appoint Kazi Feroz Rashid as the deputy leader of the opposition in parliament. But on August 7, Ershad issued a statement, saying that his party was yet to take a decision to appoint anyone as the deputy leader of the opposition. Earlier on Monday, a parliamentary members’ meeting was held in absence of HM Ershad, which was led by opposition leader Raushan Ershad. According to the decision of parliamentary committee, chief whip Tajul Islam has sent a letter for the second time to Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to appoint Kazi Feroz Rashid as the deputy leader of the opposition in parliament. In the letter 30 lawmakers of JP have signed, said a party insider. On Tuesday, Ershad has sent a letter to the speaker proposing the name of Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu. Finally, Ershad has met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday but he did not disclose anything to newsmen. Among the two groups, former president HM Ershad is now leading a group while another group is following the instructions of his wife Rawshan Ershad, also the leader of the opposition in parliament. A party insider said, Ershad took the disciplinary action as the JP leaders allegedly had made some indecent and negative comments about the party chairperson to newsmen on Tuesday, a source said. Ershad also dissolved Rangpur district, Rangpur city unit and Kurigram district committees and formed new convening committees on Wednesday, the press release said.
