Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday directed the housing and public works ministry to prepare a master plan before turning Tejgaon industrial zone into industrial-cum-commercial and residential area. The directive was given during a regular weekly cabinet meeting at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. The premier directed the authorities concerned to draw a
master plan in a planned way, a source quoted her as saying. There is no scope for preparing the master plan in an unplanned way, she said. After the meeting, cabinet secretary Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told reporters that a comprehensive master plan will be drawn before turning Tejgaon industrial zone into industrial-cum-commercial and residential area. A high-powered committee led by the housing and public works minister will review the master plan and place it before the premier for her approval, he added. The parliamentary standing committee on housing and public works ministry of the 9th parliament recommended turning Tejgaon along with major roads into commercial plots, Mushrraf mentioned. Once the decision is implemented, there will be no heavy and labour-intensive industries at Tejgaon industrial belt in the capital, the cabinet secretary said. He also also said that the residential area will also be highlighted in the master plan. The Tejgaon Industrial zone was set up in 1950 acquiring 500 acres and 20 decimals of land. There are no heavy industries at the industrial zone tough there are some 430 plots at present. On a changed scenario, the cabinet secretary said, the government in 1998 announced Tejgaon-Gulshan Road as commercial one. The cabinet secretary also congratulated Sheikh Hasina and her daughter for getting the UNESCO and WHO awards respectively. The cabinet also approved the proposal for ratification of the agreement between Bangladesh and the Philippines for waiving visa for diplomatic and official passport holders. Under the agreement, diplomatic and official passport holders of the two countries can visit each other countries for 30 days or can take transit without visa. Bangladesh inked such contacts with 12 countries while the government has been running discussions to ink such contacts 19 more countries, he said. The Cabinet also approved another proposal for upgrading the international day on anti-trafficking in drugs and its misuse to B category from existing C category.
