Countrys tanners will not fix prices for rawhide and skins of animals for sacrifice during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, saying prices of local crust and finished leather have fallen drastically on the international market. Prices of leather goods fall sharply on the global market. The USA-EU buyers also deny buying leather goods from Bangladesh for its anti-environmental activities in leather sec
tor, said Abu Taher, president, Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association. Such growing uncertainty obliged us not to fix prices of rawhide procurement this year, the wet blue businessman told this correspondent. Stakeholders usually fix prices of hides and skins ahead of Eid. Last year, the tanners fixed the prices of per square feet of a cow hide processed with salt at Tk 85-90 for the capital and Tk 75-80 outside Dhaka. In addition, prices of per square feet of a goat skin processed with salt were set at Tk 50-55 across the country and Tk 40-45 for per square feet of both buffalo hide and she-goat skin last year. This year, weve decided not to set prices for rawhide and skins of sacrificed animals. We have left the matter to the market situation, said Shahin Ahmed, president of Bangladesh Tanners Association. He urged rawhide traders, particularly the seasonal ones, to collect hides and skins based on the existing market price. During the first two months (July-August) of the current fiscal year, an Export Promotion Bureau data shows, the country fetched $202.26 million from leather exports against the target of $238.24 million. The government set the target at $1327.28 million for the 2014-15 fiscal. Bangladesh earned $1124.17 million from leather exports in the last fiscal. Taher said the sorry state of the sector will be recovered after relocation of the tannery industry from Hazaribagh to Savar Tannery Estate. Tanners hope to collect 65-70 lakh pieces of cow hides and 30 to 35 lakh pieces of goat skins during the feast of sacrifice this year. To this end, the government has decided to give loan of Tk 500 crore to the stakeholders to purchase rawhide.
